Coaches
Since the very first up to the final season, the club was under the guidance of no less than 25 managers, some of whom were even playing at our same club. Interestingly enough, the current Birkirkara FC President, Mr.Karm Galea has also both played and coached at our club. Below is the list of all the managers who had the responsibility to manage our team since its very first few days.Following a long absence of major trophies, the first honour in the Premier League finally arrived in the 1998-1999 season, when ‘the Stripes’ secured the Lowenbrau Cup, which is now known as the MFA Euro Challenge Cup. The lucky coach to have witnessed the first major honour going down to Valley Road, was Vlado Pejovic. In that same year, the same coach and his players, also managed to secure the MFA Super 5 Cup. Just another season went by, when Pejovic’s replacement, Mr.Atnas Marinov took charge of the club, and from the first to the final whistle, the club showed its’ full potential that it could be crowned champion for the very first time and this is exactly what happened, as the boys in Red and Yellow secured their first ever title which was followed by unique kind of celebrations that Malta had never witnessed before.Season Coach 1951-1953 Mr. Frankie Tabone 1961-1962 Mr. Paul Chetcuti 1964-1965 Mr. Emanuel Borg 1965-1968 Mr. Salvu Cuschieri 1968-1969 Mr. Frans Bonnici 1969-1970 Mr. Emmle Saliba 1970-1973 Mr. Salvu Cuschieri 1973-1974 Mr. Tony Buhagiar 1974-1976 Mr. Carmel Galea 1976-1978 Mr. Euchar Grech 1978-1979 Mr. Frankie Zammit 1979-1984 Mr. Marcel Scicluna 1984-1986 Mr. Joe Attard 1986-1987 Mr. Freddie Cardona 1986-1988 Mr. Joe Cilia 1988-1989 Mr. Robert Gatt 1989-1992 Mr. Lolly Aquilina 1992-1993 Mr. Todor Raykov 1993-1994 Mr. Freddie Cardona 1994-1995 Mr. Borislav Giorev 1995-1996 Mr. Lawrence Borg 1996-1997 Mr. Alan Sunderland 1996-1997 Mr. Alfred Cardona 1997-1998 Mr. Robert Gatt & Mr. Alfred Cardona 1998-1999 Mr. Vlado Pejovic 1999-2001 Mr. Atnas Marinov 2000-2001 Mr. Alfred Cardona 2001-2007 Mr. Stephen Azzopardi 2006-2008 Mr. John Buttigieg 2009 - Present Mr. Paul Zammit The first FA Trophy achieved by Birkirkara, was in the year 2002, when under the guidance of Mr.Stephen Azzopardi, our team managed to beat Sliema Wanderers with a 1-0 scoreline. Under the same manager, in 2006, the club secured its second Premier League title, four points over second-placed Sliema Wanderers. After the resignation of Stephen Azzopardi, and the appointment of Jan Artz, whose relationship with the club lasted less than a week, the board of directors opted for ex-Floriana and Valletta defender John Buttigieg. Under the guidance of Mr.Buttigieg, ‘the Stripes’ reformed the club, and brought-in new players who clearly showed the potential to become some of Malta’s best in the near future. Two seasons went by, before the disciplined coached was called upon by the MFA to become the new manager of the Malta National Team. Just before the start of the 2009 season, the newly-formed committee decided to choose ex-Valletta manager Mr. Paul Zammit as the new coach of the squad. Unexpectedly, in his very first season with our team, determined and energetic coach Mr.Zammit, managed to bring the best out of his players, and thanks to his wonderful tactical work, the third BOV Premier League title was secured much to the joy of thousands of the Birkirkara residents and the Birkirkara FC supporters in general.
