by Ayrton Galea - 14th September 2013

Very few foreign players that come to try their fortune on our island settle down quickly. However Brazilian defender Matheus Bissi gave impressive performances in his first two matches. This week we decided to interview Mathues to learn more about him.

Matheus, joined our Club last month during the Summer Transfer Window. Following an excellent debut against Sliema Wanderers, Bissi was instrumental for the Stripes in their third league match against Balzan as four minutes from time, he scored the winning goal.

Who is Matheus Bissi?

I'm 22 years old. I was born in Piracicaba in Brazil. I have always liked football and I always wanted to be a footballer player.

How do you spend your regular day?

I normally spend most of the day at home, and then go to training. When we have a rest day and I'm not tired, I try to get to know about the wonderful places that exist in Malta.

What are your main hobbies besides football?

As a good Brazilian who lived in Rio de Janeiro, I love going to the beach with my friends.

What is your favourite food?

My favourite food is pork belly that my father does, while sweets and salads from my mother. Nothing tastes like food from father and mother.

What is your favourite kind of music?

I'm very eclectic, and I like almost all types of music . I hear most of Brazilian music such as pagoda, samba, gospel music and funk. Before the games I like to listen to lively music, and recently before games I'm listening to a set list of Calvin Harris.

Mention three things you cannot live without.

God, faith and ambition.

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

Always do well no matter what , and never give up your dreams.

"Whoever you are, whatever the social status you have in life, higher or lower, keep as much strength goal, a lot of determination and always do everything with love and with faith in God, one day you get there. Somehow you get there." (Ayrton Senna).

What motivates you most in life?

Having the opportunity and the privilege to do what I love, which is, playing football.

Do you follow international football? If yes, which is your favourite nation when it comes to football, and which is your favourite club?

Yes. I do not have a favourite country. S.E.Palmeiras is a club I have to my heart, but my favourite club is always the one I'm playing for.

Who is your favourite player? Why?

Thiago Silva and Lucio. We play in the same position.

What is your biggest fear on the pitch?

In the pitch I'm not afraid of anything. I'm very happy to be able to be doing what I love.

Can you tell us a bit about your experiences before joining our Club?

The best experiences I had was being twice Portuguese U19 champion with Sporting Lisbon and have the privilege to train alongside the greats of world football , mainly in Flamengo when I trained several times with Ronaldinho.

Why did you decide to join Birkirkara FC?

To be with a champion club, where everyone have the same collective goal, as a family.

Had you ever heard of Malta? Did you ever imagine you would be playing here?

I had heard of Malta, and about its wonderful places, but I had not imagined playing here. I'm enjoying it.

How are you feeling with the Club? Have you settled in?

I feel at home, I'm feeling well. It seems that I was already at the club for years.

How would you describe the atmosphere in the dressing room?

Like a family.

How do you describe your performances so far? Do you think you reached your maximum level or there's still room for improvement?

Reasonable performances , or even good, but I still need to improve a lot to reach my maximum but I'm on the way.

Who is your best team-mate?

Everyone. All of them are my best team-mate.

What are your comments about the last match against Balzan? What were your feelings after scoring your first goal with our Club?

We're on the right track. I was very happy because our team deserved the victory, and always strived to win.

How is the squad preparing for the next game against Mosta?

We're preparing how we prepare for every match, that is concentrated to give our best on the pitch.

What are your targets and the Club's targets for this season?

To be a champion.

Do you have a message for the supporters?

I would like to tell them that their presence in the game is very important for us. We feel the energy coming on the field. They continue to always following us and supporting us. While they do not stop shouting, we will not stop running. Hug to the whole Birkirkara family.
