All set for the new BOV Premier League to start

by Ayrton Galea - 15th August 2014

Birkirkara FC will be kicking off the 2014-2015 BOV Premier League campaign this afternoon when in the first match of the league, they will face the BOV First Division Champions, Pieta Hotspurs FC.

The Stripes are still fresh from winning the first honour of the domestic season when last Friday they defeated, Valletta FC with a 2-1 score to lift the BOV Super Cup for their seventh time in history.

Birkirkara made some key-changes in their squad as the forward line is now featuring a Brazilian trio namely Rafael Ledesma, Eliandro Gonzaga and Ellinton Morais. Ledesma and Gonzaga started last Friday's match. Ledesma was involved in both of Birkirkara goals, while Gonzaga scored the opening goal. Morais was included as a substitute and also left a very good impression. The Club also signed goalkeeper Adrian Sanchez and Maltese midfielder Edmond Agius from Valletta FC.

Team's Captain, Gareth Scibberas is still out of the picture for Birkirkara, alongside Ini Akpan who suffered a broken arm. However, on the plus side, Paul Fenech will give a boost to the squad as he will be available for selection after missing the BOV Super Cup due to one-match ban.

On the other hand, Pieta Hotspurs, who will be making their return to the Maltese top division in six years, won last year's BOV First Division League with thirteen points clear on the other promoted side, Zebbug Rangers and they will be targeting to retain their Premier League position.

Pieta, under the guidance of Mr. Noel Coleiro, signed Malcolm Licari from Rabat Ajax and Luke Micallef from Melita. Goalkeeper David Cassar has extended his loan from Tarxien Rainbows for another year. Their foreign line-up will feature Argentina midfielder Claudio Frances and four Brazilians namely defender Leonardo Fortunato, midfielder Gabriel Da Silva, formerly of Qormi, and strikers Rafael Xavier and Rafael Rodrigues.

During this pre-season, Pieta got another boost ahead of their new campaign when they won the Malta Summer Cup after beating Mosta with a 3-1 score in the final.

The match will be played at the Victor Tedesco Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 18:30.

Come on the Stripes!
