Scicluna targets improvement and honours

by Ayrton Galea - 13th September 2014

Youth Academy product Ryan Scicluna will be seeking to improve his level while relying on the quality of the team to challenge for all possible honours. He said this in a short interview about the 2014-2015 season, a few hours before the fourth match of the BOV Premier League against Balzan FC.

Ryan Scicluna is another Birkirkara FC Youth Academy player that managed to make to the Senior Team, and this season he has been a regular first-eleven choice for Birkirkara's Head Coach, Mr. Paul Zammit.

His solid performance at this early stage of the season was rewarded last Tuesday when he made his debut with the Maltese National Team in the 0-2 defeat against Croatia. Ryan told us, “To play for your country is always a big honour and a privilege. It was an experience that can help me in the future. To play in these top-level games, I must continue to work hard, because there's always a room for improvement.”

The BOV Premier League will resume this weekend, and the Stripes will be hoping to make them four in a row after beating Naxxar Lions with a dramatic goal in the third match of the BOV Premier League. Despite the late goal, Ryan believes that the best side emerged as winners at the end of the day. “It was another difficult match, as all matches are difficult, because when you play against a team like Birkirkara, you'll give your best and you'll have more determination than usual. I believe that it was a deserved victory as we kept believing and pushing forward till the end. At the end of the day, we were the better side and we were deserved winners”.

Balzan has been considerably strengthened during the Summer Transfer Market. Ryan said “It will be a very delicate game because they are a good side. They have technical players and they can be dangerous on the counter. However, we are prepared for this match in every aspect.”

This will be Ryan's sixth season with the Senior Team after being introduced in the 2009-2010 season and we have asked the promising midfielder about his personal targets and the Club's targets for this season.

“My personal target is certainly to continue improve my level and to continue giving my best to Birkirkara FC. On the other hand, as a Club we're going to challenge for every honour. It has been in the DNA of Birkirkara FC in the last years to challenge for every possible honour and I believe that we can do it. We have a squad of very good quality and if we manage to be consistent throughout the season, we can emerge as winners at the end of the campaign.”

Ryan concluded by saying, “The supporters are a very important asset to this Club because they are the twelfth player. It is very important to stay behind the team throughout the whole season, especially in difficult moments because that is when we need them most. Also, I would like to thank them for their continuous support that they give us.”
