Captain Fenech cautious yet hopeful of qualification

by Ayrton Galea - 1st July 2015

Club's Captain Paul Fenech is hopeful of adding another significant achievement to Birkirkara FC's history in European competitions, as the Stripes will be seeking qualification for the third time, when tomorrow they start their adventure against Ulisses FC in the First Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League.

Buoyed by a personal fantastic season and the Club's enthusiasm following the signings of three potential players, Fenech sounded optimistic but wary of tomorrow's opponents. “It will be another significant achievement for the Club if we qualify. We are preparing very well and we will give everything tomorrow”.

“It was nice to be drawn against a team from a country that we have beaten away, but you have to look at the Club level and not at their National Team level. It won't be an easy game. You can't trust Ulisses. We only saw a handful of videos, and when playing against a side that you know little about it is a difficult task.”

“We are looking very forward and we are focused on our task. The qualification doesn't depend only on ninety minutes. There are 180 minutes to determine who will make it to the next round and in tomorrow's match a lot can happen. We must remain concentrated and with our heads held high throughout the whole match.”

On the other hand, the Club's Treasurer, Ivan Mizzi, highlighted the importance of this first leg for different aspects. “For our Club, this match is very important. We are competing in UEFA competitions for the twentieth consecutive year, a local record that no other Maltese club has achieved.

“The importance of these matches have two different aspects - the financial income that certainly cannot be ignored while on the other hand we always seek success in these competitions. We strive to achieve better results and we want to write a new page in the Club's history.”

Mr. Mizzi also pointed out the Club's hard work on increasing the Club's registered members. “We worked very hard and ensured the importance on increasing the Club's registered members. We have so far reached a very good number but we will continue to add more. We made a marketing campaign to attract the supporters tomorrow and we are hopeful for a big crowd.”
