'Stripes' cruise to FA Trophy Semi-Final
by Matthaeus Grasso - 7th February 2009Birkirkara were listed as the second semi-finalists, as 'The Stripes' managed to beat Tarxien R. with just the odd goal.
Despite this close result, Birkirkara were dominant over the opponents throughout the ninety minutes, as Bernard Paris, the squad's goalkeeper was rarely tested.
Our side took the lead after just three minutes, as Angus Buhagiar rose to head in a free-kick from the left-hand side.
'The Stripes' continued to be the better side, and in fact, the score read 2-0 after twenty-six minutes, when an incisive run by Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza, resulted in the forward putting the ball low past the opposing goalkeeper; Anthony Curmi.
The half-time whistle found our side leading 2-0
The second-half was characterized by a number of controversial decisions by the match officials, with the most controversial one being a straight red card shown to goalscorer Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza.
Barely a minute after this sending-off, Tarxien R. pulled one beack through deadly finisher Daniel Mariano Bueno, who gave some small and useless hope to his side and supporters.
Birkirkara's squad had the ability to keep the composure and hold for a very well-deserved victory, which now sees our side progress to the semi-final stages of the U*Bet FA Trophy.
Well Done Yellows!
