Get Together organised by the Stripes Supporters Club
by Ayrton Galea - 25th July 2010On Friday, 31 July 2010, the 'Stripes Supporters Club' will be organising a "Get Together" for all the supporters. The main aim of the get together is to thank the players, coaches, kit manager and the rest of the technical staff, together with all rest that gave their part in the success achieved in the UEFA Champions League.
This year the 'Stripes' managed for the first time ever go through to the 2nd round of the same competition by eliminating Andorra's side Santa Coloma on 7-3 aggregate. In the first leg the match was cancelled due the bad state of the pitch with Birkirkara being awarded a 3-0 walkover victory. In the second leg the 'Stripes' beat Santa Coloma with a 4-3 score line.
In the 2nd round a tough draw meant that Birkirkara FC had to face Slovakia's Champions MSK Zilina. In the 2008-2009 Europa League, Zilina had managed to advance till the group stage of the same competition and managed to beat the English side Aston Villa with a 2-1 score line and losing to Ajax and Hamburg with just a single goal. In 2009-2010 Europa League once again Zilina mark their name by eliminating the Croatia's side Hajduk Split with a 2-1 aggregate and had been eliminated in the playoffs by Partizan with a 3-1 score line.
When considering all these facts the challenge of MSK Zilina was very difficult for our squad but on Wednesday 13th July Birkirkara FC managed to do what had seemed to be impossible as thanks to a solitary goal by defender Nikola Vukanac, Birkirkara FC beat MSK Zilina in the first leg. This was the first time ever that a Maltese team registered a victory in the 2nd round of the same competition. In the 2nd leg Birkirkara FC was defeated with a 3-0 score line which results into a 3-1 aggregate for MSK Zilina and ended our dream in this competition.
You are all invited for Friday's "Get Together" which will take place in the Club's Hall (on top of the Mc Donald's restaurant) from 19:30. Your presence will be a way to thank all those involved for their effort, while motivating them for the upcoming season!
See you all on Friday!
