Birkirkara succumb to Marsaxlokk
by Ayrton Galea - 25th October 2010Birkirkara suffered their 2nd loss of the season as yesterday, Marsaxlokk managed to beat 'The Stripes' with a 5-2 result, with the reigning champions having a terrible performance especially in the defence department.
For Birkirkara, Shaun Bajada, Alan Tabone and Rowen Muscat were all missing due to injury, besides Esequiel Lovizon.
The match opened on a slow tempo with Marsaxlokk having more possession, but Birkirkara managing to share play, with the 1st Division champions. Then in the 32nd minute a perfect pass by Trevor Templeman, found Alfred Effiong unmarked with the latter going past Manuel Bartolo to put the ball into the back of the net.
Birkirkara replied immediately and almost equalised when a perfect cross by Emiliano Lattes found Terence Vella unmarked. His low shot was blocked by the goalkeeper and from the rebound, Paul Fenech's shot ended wide.
Birkirkara equalised on the 40th minute when a shot by Michael Galea was deflected by Terence Vella, with the goalkeeper going in the opposite direction of the ball to make the score 1-1.
Birkirkara were heading for the half time with a 1-1 draw, but Alfred Effiong had other plans, when he scored his second goal of the match. His first shot which was blocked by Ryan Harding, with the ball finding Alfred Effiong again who managed to beat the goalkeeper.
The second half continued from where the first half had left off, as Marsaxlokk extend their lead when Dylan Kokavessis beat Manuel Bartolo for the third time from an angled shot.
Three became four on the 56th minute when Alfred Effiong scored his hat trick by beating Manuel Bartolo with a low shot.
Paul Fenech reduced the gap on the 62nd minute with a gem of a goal, when he fired a shot from almost 30 metres away and left the Marsaxlokk goalkeeper with no chance of saving.
The game was well and truly over for Birkirkara fifteen minutes from the end when Alfred Effiong scored his fourth personal goal and the fifth for Marsaxlokk.
