Under-19's keep on winning
by Ayrton Galea - 4th April 2014Birkirkara Under-19's, who have already won the league, registered their third consecutive victory, when on Wednesday evening they defeated Hamrun Spartans with a result of 4-2.
The Stripes continued to enjoy an excellent season as they confirmed the team's strength, even after they were crowned Champions. They have now reached the record of 45 points in the Youths League Section A, with a game to go.
Birkirkara started the match brightly as they surged ahead early in the match. In the opening moments, Shawn Deguara took the ball from the right, raced forward and his cool finish put Birkirkara in the lead.
Hamrun failed to deal with Birkirkara's aggressive start, and on the fifteenth minute, the latter doubled their lead. Russell Gatt De Raffaele was floored inside the box and the referee was left with no option but to point to the spot. From the eleven metre, Kurt Zammit made no mistake.
Birkirkara built a comfortable lead but they did not enjoy it for long, as Hamrun managed to pull one back to get back in the match. However, before the half-time whistle, Jonathan Licari regained Birkirkara's two-goal lead by scoring the third goal thanks to a fine header.
The second half started like the first one as Birkirkara went out strong. However it was Hamrun who managed to narrow the gap, thanks to a well-taken free-kick, which once again put the Spartans back in the equation.
There were few notable actions in the rest of the second half as Birkirkara were mature enough to slow the tempo of the match. However, late in the match, Birkirkara sealed the issue with the fourth goal thanks to Shawn Deguara, who scored his second personal goal with a fine strike.
