'It was a dream come true' - Kurt Zammit
by Ayrton Galea - 21st July 2015Birkirkara FC Youth Academy product, Kurt Zammit, described his match against West Ham United as a dream coming true. The eighteen-year old forward talked with this website following his match in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League in the narrow defeat against West Ham United FC.
With Paul Fenech unable to continue playing being a few minutes into the second half, Coach Giovanni Tedesco substituted him with Kurt Zammit. Kurt had a very satisfying performance with his continuous pressing. The youngster was also involved in Birkirkara's best scoring opportunity in the match, when he served Miccoli who passed to Morais, with his shot scratching past the far post.
Zammit told us, “It was a dream come true to play against this big team of the Barclays Premier League. I have never had that feeling, not to that extent. Now that I experienced it, I don't want to settle for just the memory, but as they say, ‘There is no limit. You just keep going and going'.
Growing up and going through to all sectors of the Academy, we asked about his experience. Kurt said, “I started football at the age of three, so this means I was raised by the Club for nothing than sixteen, gradually coming up through the ranks.”
He added, “Nothing gives satisfaction quite like a debut in the UEFA Europa League against an English Premier League Club, of the sort of West Ham United. I would like to thank my family for this achievement, as from day one till today, the help and motivation from them never stopped.”
Kurt commented on the last match. “As we knew before the match, this was going to be a very hard battle. We studied our opponents well and obeyed all the instructions of our coach and doing so, we didn't let them penetrate easily. We did what few expected, we were so close for a historic result. Getting a standing ovation from the 33,000 home supporters at full time shows how much we deserved a good result. Last but not least I would like to thank the coaching staff that has given me this opportunity to show my abilities.”
Kurt went on by saying, “All the team was a bit disappointed after a brilliant display in away match, and having the game under control, and then conceding in the last minute. It was harsh, but everything can be won or lost, in the next match. If tactically we play as we played away, we will do well for sure.”
Finally, Kurt concluded with a message for the supporters. “I would like to thank all the supporters and would like to tell them that we need their support next Thursday, for our home match against West Ham United.”
