Women's Team defeat Kirkop in friendly match
by Ayrton Galea - 27th August 2015Birkirkara FC Women's Team registered a narrow 1-0 victory in the first friendly match for Season 2015-2016 when thanks to a satisfactory performance, they defeated Kirkop United FC.
With the Women's Super Cup less than four weeks away, the Stripes continued with their intensive preparations for this match. This was the first friendly under the guidance of coach Jean Pierre Portanier.
The Stripes scored the solitary goal on the fifteenth minute. Goalkeeper Janice Xuereb delivered an excellent drop-kick in the path of Raina Giusti who raced down the left flank and lobbed over goalkeeper Sharon Costantino.
Raina was unlucky not to score her second seven minutes from half-time, when following an excellent build-up consisting of one-touch passes and quick movements, the Birkirkara striker had her shot smashing against the up-right after being served by Kelly Agius Pace.
In the second half, coach Portanier made six changes. Giusti could have added her second goal when after being served by Melania Bajada, she raced forward but her shot in front of the goalkeeper was blocked.
Substitute Isabelle Mazzitelli went close with two attempts, first cleared by a defender and then blocked by the goalkeeper. Moments later, Giusti went close with a fine shot which was saved by the Kirkop goalkeeper.
