Birkirkara to face SU 1 Dezembro in a difficult match

by Ayrton Galea - 13th August 2012

This evening Birkirkara will be playing their second match of the UEFA Women Champions League Qualifying Round, and they will face group favorites SU 1 Dezembro of Portugal.

Birkirkara started their commitments with a heavy defeat of 8-0 against Olimpia Cluj-Napoca. If Olimpia showed their class, Birkirkara showed their heart and determination as they kept fighting for every ball till the very last second. Despite this defeat, the squad is still brimming with determination and optimism.

On the other hand, two late goals for SU 1 Dezembro sealed comfortable 4-0 victory over Glentoran FC of Northern Ireland. Andreia Silvia, Filipa Galvao, Elsa Ventura and Maria Madalena Elvas Fontes scored the goals for the Portuguese side.

SU 1 Dezembro, who were crowned champions last season, registered 18 wins, five draws and one defeat out of 24 matches in their respective league. They managed to score 61 goals while conceding 19. They managed to keep a clean sheet nine times while they failed to score only two times. The biggest victory in the league was on the 8 September 2011 when they defeated UN Cadima with an 8-1 score.

This will not be the first time that these two teams will face each other in the Women's Champions League, since they had met in 2009. On the 30 July 2009 SU 1 Dezembro trashed Birkirkara with a 10-0 score.

The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 17:30. We would like to encourage you to come and support our beloved team as your support plays a very important part. Entrance for this match is free but a donation in aid of the Community Chest Fund would be appreciated.

Come on the Stripes!
