Stripes take on Balzan

by Ayrton Galea - 29th March 2014

Champions Birkirkara FC will be seeking to return to winning ways to stay on track for their aspiration of winning back to back titles, but they are expecting to have another tricky encounter when they take on Balzan FC this afternoon.

The league has now reached its crucial phase, as with just five matches to go, the Stripes are leading by two points over Valletta. Today they take on one of most tactical-discipline teams, Balzan, and they might be a tough nut to crack.

The defeat against Hibernians might have created doubts on how much Birkirkara can continue leading the league, but the five-star performance against Valletta set them back on track despite the match ending in a goal-less draw. A draw, which left everything unchanged at the top of the table, with Birkirkara enjoying a two point lead over Valletta.

On the other hand, Balzan lie at the bottom of the Championship Pool with fourteen points from twenty-seven matches. They are still searching for the first points in this phase. In their last match they went near, yet so far, after they built a 2-0 lead in the first half against Mosta but the latter made a comeback to win the match with a score of 4-2.

Birkirkara have so far managed to win all three matches against Balzan, all with a result of 2-1. In the first round of the Championship Pool, the Stripes were one goal down till the break but a quick fire double turned the match around and handed three points to the Stripes.

Ryan Scicluna for Birkirkara will be back after serving a one-match ban.

The match will be played at the Hibernians Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 16:00. Transport will leave from the Infetti Training Centre at 14:45.

Come on the Stripes!
