Nikola Vukanac is Serbian and he was born on 14 January 1986.
Nikola is a product of FK Zemun where he began his football career and eventually joined the senior squad.
He then moved to FK Rimavska Sobota and then in the 2008-2009 season to FK Vranov, both Slovakians sides.
In the 2009-2010 season, Nikola was brought to Malta by our Club but was he not retained due to the number of foreigners that were with our team, and he joined Vittoriosa Stars.
With Vittoriosa he made his first and only appearance on the 22 August in the 3-0 defeat against Sliema Wanderers. Few days later, Vittoriosa were relegated to the First Division due to corruption in the previous season with Nikola Vukanac released from his contract.
Birkirkara’s central defender, Ronni Hartvig had to retire due to work commitments, and ‘The Stripes’ were left with a gap in the defence and they decided to sign Nikola Vukanac.
His first season was one to remember as besides the positive performances, he managed to win the Premier League when on the 5 May, Birkirkara were crowned champions for the third time in their history. In the Premier League, Nikola made 25 appearances and scored three goals. >
The following season, 2010-2011 could not begin on a better note for Vukanac. After eliminating Santa Coloma with a 7-3 aggregate, in the UEFA Champions League, in the 2nd round Birkirkara faced the Slovak side of MSK Zilina. Birkirkara won the first leg with a 1-0 score with Nikola scoring the important goal after just forty-seven seconds to put Birkirkara in history as the first and only Maltese team that had ever won a match in the 2nd round of this competition. Unfortunately enough, Birkirkara were eliminated with a 3-1 aggregate as they suffered a 3-0 defeat in the 2nd away leg.
In the Premier League, Birkirkara failed to reach the previous season’s level as they ended in the third position and eliminated in the semi-final of the U*BET FA Trophy.
In this season, Nikola made 17 appearances in which he started in 16 and once included as a substitute. He managed two goals this season, one in the Premier League in the 1-1 draw against Vittoriosa and other one in highly entertaining 3-3 draw against Sliema Wanderers in the Quarter Final of the U*BET FA Trophy, where Birkirkara qualified thanks to the penalty shoot out. He was released in the end of the season.
However, in February 2012, Vukanac returned to Birkirkara FC signing a contract till the end of the season.
If many considered Nikola’s 2010-2011 season as a disappointing one, his third season with our Club was totally different as Nikola had a very successful spell.
Forming the central backs with Brazilian defender Rodrigo Pereira, Nikola’s performances were always solid and concentrated.
In the Premier League he made twelve appearances, all starting from the beginning and he managed to score one goal. This goal arrived in the first match of the third round when on the 14 March, Birkirkara defeated Floriana with a 3-1 score, with Nikola Vukanac scoring the second goal thanks to a fine header.
Following this positive spell, Nikola Vukanac was offered another one year extension which he accepted. He signed the contract on Saturday, 12 May 2012.
The 2012-2013 season proved to be another memorable season for the Club and for Vukanac himself, as the Stripes’ clinched their fourth Premier League title in their history, with Nikola having superb performances which confirmed his solid defending skills.
Vukanac’s performance during the 2012-2013 season were excellent, as the strong defender not only impressed by his defending skills, but also with his scoring ones as Vukanac netted no less than seven goals to end up as the Club’s fourth top scorer in the Premier League. Nikola’s most memorable goal this season arrived in the league-decider title match on the 11 May, when Vukanac completed the comeback for the Stripes by scoring the second goal in the 3-1 victory that saw Birkirkara winning their fourth title.
In this season, Nikola made 27 appearances, all from the beginning and as said earlier, the strong defender managed to find the net for no less than seven times.
In the beginning of August, Nikola asked permission to the Club to seek a foreign club. This request was accepted, and he tried his luck in his native Serbia. However, Nikola then signed a fresh two and a half year contract with Birkirkara FC on Monday, 11 November 2013.
