Nikola Vukanac is Serbian and he was born on 14 January 1986. The strong central defender joined our Club in the 2009 Summer Transfer Market.

Nikola is a product of FK Zemun where he began his football career and eventually joined the senior squad. He then moved to FK Rimavska Sobota and then in the 2008-2009 season to FK Vranov, both Slovakians sides.

In the 2009-2010 season, Nikola was brought to Malta by our Club but was he not retained due to the number of foreigners that were with our team, and he joined Vittoriosa Stars. However, few days later, Vittoriosa were relegated to the First Division due to corruption in the previous season and Nikola Vukanac was released from his contract.

With Birkirkara’s central-defender Ronni Hartvig deciding to retire, the Stripes were quick to snatch Vukanac. His first season was one to remember as besides the positive performances, he managed to win the Premier League when on the 5 May, Birkirkara were crowned champions for the third time in their history. In the Premier League, Nikola made 25 appearances and scored three goals.

In the second round of the UEFA Champions League 2010-2011, Birkirkara faced Slovakian’s side MSK Zilina and won the first leg with a 1-0 score with Nikola scoring the important goal after just forty-seven seconds to put Birkirkara in history as the first and only Maltese team that had ever won a match in the 2nd round of this competition.

Following a disappointing 2010-2011 season, Birkirkara released Vukanac, but eighth months later, the Serbian defender returned to our Club as he signed a fresh contract till the end of the season. Have produced satisfactory performance in his four-month spell with our Club following his return, Vukanac was offered another one year extension which he accepted. He signed the contract on Saturday, 12 May 2012.

The 2012-2013 season proved to be another memorable season for the Club and for Vukanac himself, as the Stripes' clinched their fourth Premier League title in their history, with Nikola having superb performances which confirmed his solid defending skills. During this season, Vukanac found the net seven times.

In the beginning of August 2013, Nikola asked permission to the Club to seek a foreign club. This request was accepted, and he tried his luck in his native Serbia. However, Nikola then signed a fresh two and a half year contract with Birkirkara FC on Monday, 11 November. During this season, Nikola Vukanac was voted as the best central defender for the 2013-2014 season during the MFPA Awards.

Nikola Vukanac brought to an end speculation that he will leave the Club in the 2015 Summer Transfer Market by signing a fresh three-year contract with our Club on Sunday, 14 June 2015.
