Birkirkara FC clan visit 'Dar Santa Marija'

by Ivan Mizzi - 9th November 2010

Last Saturday, Birkirkara FC's First Team, accompanied by the team's Head and Assistant Coaches and members of the Committee, paid a visit to the 'Dar Santa Marija' rehabilitation centre in Luqa.

Upon their arrival, the Birkirkara contingent was welcomed by the Sedqa staff and residents of the centre. Then they were shown around the complex by the residents themselves. The residents explained how they spend their days doing chores, in a totally disciplined environment. This was followed by a scrumptious lunch, prepared with pride by the residents themselves.

The whole group then had an informal meeting where they shared experiences. Comparisons were made between the two groups - for example, how loyalty and honesty are important for both groups in order to attain their totally different objectives. Both groups also agreed that one must fight hard and never give up in the face of obstacles. During this session, a certain connection between the players and the residents became evident.

After this session, everybody headed to St. Aloysius Training Grounds in Birkirkara by coach. There, representatives of Birkirkara FC presented the residents with a Birkirkara FC kit. The Head Coach then led a light training session and team-based games for all to participate in.

This was followed by a mini seven-a-side football tournament. The players and residents were split up into four mixed teams, and all teams played against each other. It was rather surprising to notice the football skills some of the residents had.

After a well-needed shower to cool down, the whole group shared some food and drinks. The residents spontaneously asked the players to autograph the Birkirkara FC shirts they had received earlier. Unfortunately it was time for goodbyes, and the event was brought to an end.

Birkirkara FC would like to thank the staff and residents of 'Dar Santa Marija' for the warm welcome, but more importantly for the invaluable sharing of experiences. We wish all the residents a swift recovery so that they may go back into society to lead healthy, prosperous lives.
