Interview with Ryan Scicluna

by Ayrton Galea - 16th March 2011

Last Saturday Birkirkara registered a very comfortable 4-1 win against Marsaxlokk. The first goal was scored by Ryan Scicluna and it was his first goal in the Premier League.

Although this was his first goal in the Premier League, it was not his first goal with Birkirkara as in the beginning of this season, precisely on the on 3rd August, he scored his first goal in a triangular tournament. Interestingly enough, our opponents on that day were also Marsaxlokk.

We asked Ryan for his comments about the previous game. His first words were, "Personally I think our last game was one of best games we played this season and a very crucial win because it puts us in second place once again."

For a youngster, being selected in the seniors squad is always an honour, but even more so when it is the squad of the current champions. We asked Ryan how he feels when he is selected in the first eleven list. He told us, "I just owe it all to the coach because not many coaches give chances to young players like me, even more in an ambitious team like Birkirkara. He has helped me to grow and gave me lots of opportunities to gain experience."

The first goal is something special for the majority of the players, but what does it mean for Ryan? Ryan's answer which is of little or no surprise was, "It was probably the biggest moment of my career so far!"

Ryan still forms part of the Under 19 squad. We asked him if he still trains with them as well, and which squad he prefers to train with and what are the differences. Ryan replied, "Yes I train (with the Under 19) one day before if we have a match and there is really no preference or differences. I just try to do my best in both so that I improve."

Next Saturday we are facing a crucial match against Sliema in the quarter final of the U*BET FA Trophy. We asked Ryan how the team is preparing for this game, and what it is expecting from it. He said "For me it is the first time I will be competing in this competition so for me it is added excitement. We should prepare for this game as any other game because we are a club that should go in all the games with a winning mentality. Surely, in the end we know that if we win this match, we will be a step closer to claiming this trophy, which is surely one of our remaning targets."

We concluded this interview by asking Ryan about his targets both in the present and in the future. He said "My main objective right now is to keep gaining experience and hopefully becoming a better player. And in the future, who knows? It's difficult to predict, but something I surely want is to win honours, preferably starting with the FA trophy from this year."
