AGM 2010-11 - New Committee Elected

by Ayrton Galea - 10th June 2011

Yesterday evening Birkirkara FC held their Annual General Meeting for the 2010-2011 season.

Club Secretary Mr Gilbert Agius opened the meeting by explaining that six of the nominations received for the committee election were not valid since the statute states that only paid up members were able to contest. In order that these persons can still contest the election, the statute had to be suspended. A show off hands election saw the statute being suspended and therefore these persons were eligible to contest.

Then, Mr Aguis started with the first item on the agenda by reading of the minutes of the Annual General Meeting 2009-2010. This was followed by the administrative report, which was a detailed round-up of what happened through the past season, from when the team opened its involvements by two consecutive defeats in the Euro Challenge Cup against Sliema Wanderers and Valletta, till they ended their season with a loss against Floriana in the Semi Final of the U*BET FA Trophy.

Club's treasurer Mr Ivan Mizzi, on behalf of Carmelo Callejja and the rest of the Committee thanked all BKR Radio volunteers for their work. As a member of the marketing board he continued by thanking everyone who contributes to the official website as he explained that this is not an easy task and takes several hours each day. Then, he changed the subject to the club's financials where he explained the challenges that every Club has to face which gets harder year after year due to ever more stringent rules of both the MFA and the UEFA. He thanked all those that helped the Club financially directly or indirectly, including the helpers, Supporters Club, Ultras and the Club's members.

He continued by giving highlights from the financial report, which was too detailed to be read in full. Financially it was a very satisfying season, as there was a positive surplus generated.

After reading the reports of the Ladies Team and the Nursery, it was time for the final item on the agenda which was the President's address. Mr Karm Galea opened the final speech before the election by giving an overview of what happened since he took the reins of the Club as President.

After winning the Championship in the 2009-2010 season, there two main targets for the next season. The first, was that the club manages to win the Qualifying round and qualify for the 1st round of the UEFA Champions League. After a walkover victory in Andorra, Birkirkara FC registered another win to make it to the first round of the Champions League for the first time ever. The dream continued by writing a new page in the Maltese football when Birkirkara emerged as winners in the 1st leg of the 2nd round of the same competition to be the first Maltese team to accomplish that. Secondly, the other target was that once again the team must challenge for the main honours but as everyone knows this did not happen for several reasons.

He concluded his speech by saying that after two years, he will be no longer be the President of the Club and he was not contesting for re-election. He received a standing ovation. At that point Senior Vice President Joe Gauci, Vice President Andrew Calleja, and committee member Camilleri Lolly declared that they will also not be seeking re-election and withdrew their nomination.

This was followed by the election for the new committee, and the following members were elected:
Bezzina Manuel
Borg John
Borg Martin
Busutill Peter
Calleja Carmelo
Calleja Peter
Deguara Jason
Delia Adrian
Gatt Mario
Licari Joseph
Micallef Charles
Mizzi Ivan

Pisani Joe
Zammit Joseph

The posts and roles of the committee members will be decided at the first committee meeting, which will be held shortly.
