Gareth Sciberras interviewed

by Ayrton Galea - 2nd February 2012

For this week's interview we talked with Gareth Sciberras. We asked him about how he is feeling after being with our Club for some months, the present situation of the team and the future targets.

Six months has passed since you joined our Club. What has changed during these six months?

Quite a bit has changed to be honest. We have changed coach, several players have come and gone and overall it has been a very bumpy ride, with quite a few up and downs.

How happy are you with your performances so far?

On a personal level I'm satisfied but I'm sure that I can contribute more to the team.

Which was your best match?

I think it was against Valletta in the first round.

Which was the team's best match?

Also against Valletta in the first round.

In several matches Mr. Zammit utilised you as a central defender. Do you like playing in this position and why?

Everyone knows that my preferred position is in midfield, but if the coach asks me to play in central defence or in any other position, I will do my best to help the team in that position. The team always comes first.

So far we have played using several formations such as 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and even 4-5-1. Which one do you prefer and why?

The coach varies the formation according to the team we are facing. It is also important to change formations during the game as instances happen during the game that will require the team to adjust. I honestly don't have a preference.

What are your comments about this disappointing streak we are going through?

It's been a difficult period for everyone involved with the Club. Some might say we are unlucky. But I think that collectively we have to all take responsibility of what has happened and work together to get the club back on track and where it belongs.

Which department is not really functioning, the defence or the attack? Why?

I have to say that the whole team is not functioning as it should be. It would be very immature if we start pointing fingers at players or positions.

What are your comments about our last match?

It has been practically the same situation for every game we have played lately. We are team who dominates possession but we are not turning that possession into goals and at the same time making us vulnerable in defence.

We are facing Balzan in a direct clash for a berth in the Championship Pool. What are your comments and how are you preparing for it?

Yes it is a direct clash and one which we can't lose. Our preparation will remain the same, since the best thing to do is focus on our job and work hard as a team to get a positive result.

Do you still believe that we can make it to the Championship Pool? Will we manage to qualify for the UEFA Competition?

Yes I still believe we will qualify for the championship pool and from there we should take it game by game. Hopefully things will look brighter once we are in the top six.

Last Saturday a banner was displayed to show the disappointment for this negative streak. This week we are facing a do or die battle. Do you have any message for our supporters?

A true supporter is there for his team in the good and bad times. We as players are trying our best to get out of this negative patch, so we need all the support we can get.
