Birkirkara to face Mosta in Women's Knock Out Final

by Ayrton Galea - 7th May 2012

Champions Birkirkara will cross swords with Mosta in the Women's Knock Out Final, tomorrow evening in a much awaited match.

Birkirkara eliminated Gozo with a score of 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the score in the extra time period was still reading 1-1. Then, they eliminated Hibernians thanks to a 3-1 score. Stephania Farrugia opened the score for our side by converting a penalty mid-way through the second half. Then two goals were scored in the extra time period thanks to Isabelle Mazzitelli and Kelly Agius Pace.

On the other hand, tomorrow's opponents Mosta had a much easier passage so far. In the quarter final they humiliated Kirkop United with a 6-0 score. In the semi-final, Mgarr surprised Mosta with an early goal. However Mosta advanced to the final as they came back from behind and eliminated Mgarr with a score of 3-1.

Birkirkara and Mosta met three times this season. The first time Mosta won the Super Cup with a narrow 1-0 win. In the league campaign, Birkirkara won the first round with a 1-0 win. Then they shared the spoils twice; first in a goal-less draw in the second round, and then in a draw of 1-1 in the third round. Birkirkara were crowned league champions without losing a single match.

The Women's Team coach, Mr. Johann Scicluna, had this to say. “We are expecting a difficult match but our team is prepared well physically, mentally, technically and is tactically disciplined, so our team is in a position to win the double. If we manage this we will achieve two targets at once, winning the double and to remain unbeaten.

“Although we're already crowned as champions, we're always thirsty for more success and we will try everything to keep the Cup in our trophy showcase. Therefore I wish my players the best of matches, so they can show our full potential with a great performance, and we will thus please the numerous supporters that will be supporting us tomorrow at the stadium.

“I would like to recall our motto that worked in every match of the season - One for all, and all for one. Come on Yellows!”

In these types of matches supporters play a very important part and we encourage everyone to come to the stadium and support the players right from the first whistle.

For the first time in the history of local Women's football, the match will be transmitted lived, and it will be aired on TVM 2. The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium and will kick off at 19:00.

Come on the Stripes!
