Women's Team players update

by Ivan Mizzi - 24th July 2012

In preparation for the UEFA Women Champions League matches next month, and for the upcoming Women's First Division League, Birkirkara FC have been active on the transfer market.

Gabriella Zahra makes a permanent move to Birkirkara FC

Gabriella Zahra has made a permanent move to Birkirkara FC following a two-year loan spell with our Club. Gabriella has signed a three year contract with our Club.

Gabriella, aged 21, is not a new face with the Birkirkara squad as throughout these two years she established herself as one of the best players in the squad. In her first season with our Club, the former Melita's midfielder managed to score four goals in the Women's First Division League with Birkirkara ending up in the third place. As a consolation for failing to win the league, the squad managed to win the Women's Knock-Out cup after the Super Cup which was Gabriella's first personal honour.

Her second season was a more memorable one. Gabriella was a regular choice and was the most regular player in the squad as she featured in all matches played. She also ended the third Birkirkara top scorer with ten goals. Personal achievements aside, Gabriella won her first Women League title. The only disappointment in this season was the Women's Knock Out Final, when Birkirkara were defeated by Mosta thanks to a penalty shoot-out.

Gabriella told us, "I actually decided to move to Birkikara two years ago but since I wasn't sure of my decision I decided I should move on loan. But after these last two seasons I believe I'm making a very good decision. I thank Melita for showing me my first few steps in football, and for always being a family team. Even now that I'm not part of their team any more, I'm still welcomed by my ex-team mates."

She added, "When I first moved to Birkirkara, the atmosphere wasn't the best but I was welcomed very quickly and the team integrated me very well. By time, I managed to see that my team mates are extraordinary. We have our differences and difficult moments but who doesn't? The same can be said of our technical staff, and I have to say that I've never seen such hard working staff. They work to give us everything we could possibly need and for that I am very thankful. Training with Coach Johann is never boring and every training session is different. He makes us work hard but we all know it's for the best of all of us and I would like to thank him for training me to take a big step in football."

About the upcoming UEFA Women Champions League matches, Gabriella said, "Next up is the UEFA Women Champions League which I've been looking forward to since the day we were mathematically crowned champions. We're three weeks away and the level of excitement kicks in a bit more each day. It is simply a dream come true.”

Gabriella finished by saying “Playing with Birkirkara made me achieve many awards like the Super Cup, the KO and the league but it also got me nominated for the best female award player a few weeks ago. I'm looking forward for more seasons with Birkikara."

We would like to wish Gabriella the best of luck and more satisfying performances with our Club.

Kirsty Feasey joins Birkirkara FC

The English defender, Kirsty Feasey has also joined the Women's Team.

Kirsty, who is 19 years old is a former Reading FC player. She is of Maltese descent as both her mother and her grandmother are Maltese. She is not new to local football, as she has played for the National Team. In fact, she made her debut on 3rd March 2011 in the narrow 1-0 victory over Georgia.

Without any doubt, this acquisition will give the Coach Mr. Johann Scicluna new options at the back.

We would like to wish Kirsty the best of luck in her adventure with our Club.

Ruth Steer Chetham moves to Hibernians

Birkirkara FC and Hibernians FC have agreed terms on the permanent move of midfielder Ruth Steer Chetham. Ruth will join rivals Hibernians on a permanent move following a loan spell with the same Hibernians last season. Ruth netted one goal in the 2010-2011 season, which was the last season she playing for Birkirkara. In that season Birkirkara ended in third place in the Women's First Division League and were winners of the Women's Knock out.

We would like to thank Ruth for her service and wish her all the best of luck in the future.
