Women's Team to start title defence against Hamrun Spartans

by Ayrton Galea - 24th September 2012

The Birkirkara FC Women's Team will open their challenge to defend the league title tomorrow evening when they will face newly promoted Hamrun Spartans.

Birkirkara, who lost the Super Cup to Mosta by means of a penalty shoot-out two weeks ago are hot favourites for this match and they will be eager to open their league commitments in style.

Last season, Birkirkara dominated the local league right from the start, and won it with 66 points from 18 matches. They managed to register 14 wins and four draws, by netting 74 goals and conceding just 8 and ‘The Stripes' managed to end their league commitments unbeaten.

On the other hand, Hamrun Spartans was among the best teams in the Second Division as they ended in the second place with 52 points, eight before Second Division Champions Mgarr. ‘The Spartans' played 20 matches in which they won seventeen, drew once and lost just two matches. They netted no less than 93 goals and conceded fourteen.

While Hamrun Spartans will be trying their best to avoid the relegation, it is not a secret that Birkirkara will be all out to keep the league title. Although all the clan must keep its feet on the ground, the huge potential found in the squad is quite evident and this can lead for another successful year.

The match will be played at the Luxol Grounds and it is scheduled to start at 20:00.

We would like to urge all the supporters to come to the stadium and support the Women's team in their first league match.

Come on the Stripes!
