Birkirkara Under 15s and Under 17s maintain perfect start

Sunday saw both our Under 15s and Under 17s teams involved in their respective league matches. It turned out to be another positive day four the young Stripes as both squads ended their games on the winning side, thus maintaining a 100% record in the league.

The first to be involved were the Under 17s, who played Melita at their own grounds in a crunch match which ended 4-3 for the Yellow-Reds. Our team outplayed their opponents for large stretches of the first half, creating a good number of goalscoring opportunities through neat football, but it was only until the last ten minutes of the half that Birkirkara managed to open the score with two goals. Leon Zammit opened the score while Russell Gat De Raffaele doubled the score. Melita tried to put our defence under pressure mainly using long balls, but the rearguard held well and the score at half time was 2-0. The second half turned to be a livelier affair and while Birkirkara managed to increase the score to 4-0, with Kurt Zammit netting a brace, Melita threw caution to the wind and their endevours were rewarded with three goals in the space of ten minutes. Birkirkara though, after this temporary drop in concentration, regained their composure to see the game through without conceded the equaliser.

Coach Marko Glumac had some mixed feelings after the match. "The boys today learned a big lesson that the game is over only whenthe referee whistles the end. I was pleased with my players' performance and attitude during the game except for ten minutes when we got punished for losing our rhythm. It is a good lesson for the coming games to keep us focused. We have a good team spirit and the boys are aware of the importance of their commitment to achieve good results."

It was then the turn of the Under 15s to play their league match versus Zejtun Corinthians at the Santa Lucija Ground. This was a one-way traffic game with ‘The Stripes' securing a 6-0 win. Our boys dominated proceedings from start to finish with the result never in danger. Four first-half goals all but put the match to bed as captain Kieran Xuereb netted two goals, with Ryan Gauci and Fabien Lufi scoring one each. The aim in the scond half was to keep up with the momentum while also introducing players from the bench. Even though five substitutions were effected in the space of few minutes, the team kept a good level of consistency and Kieran Xuereb scored two more goals to get a personal pocker of goals and a sound 6-0 win for his team.

Assistant coach John Vella, who was in charge of the team yesterday, was visibly please with the team's performance and outcome of the match. "This was a very good performance where the players responded well to the instructions given to them prior to the game. At the end of the day we won the 3 points at stake in a comfortable and convincing manner."

Birkirkara Under 15s will now be in action on Sunday 14th October against Mellieha at 13:00, the venue being the Rabat Ajax training grounds in Mtarfa. On the other hand, the Under 17s will have to wait another week in order to play their next league match against Paola Hibs on Sunday 21st October at 09:00 again at the Rabat Ajax training grounds. We urge you to come and supporter our youth teams!
