Birkirkara Under 15's made immediate amends as a week from the defeat against St Patrick's they managed to beat Tarxien Rainbows 6-0 at the Siggiewi Grounds last Sunday. This was an important win since the Rainbows were just a point above the Stripes in the standings before this match, thus overtaking them and ending the first round of matched in second place, 9 points behind leaders San Gwann, who however still have a game in hand.

It was a very all round performance, surely one of the best of the season, and it reflected the sheer determination the boys had in order to make up for the previous match disappointment.

The YellowReds made their intentions clear from the start, and did not take long to break the deadlock as after some good passes, Nick Borg made teh most of a mistake by the opposition goalkeeper. The same sort of passing movement paved the way for the Stripes to put the game beyond any doubt by half time, as Nick Borg made it 2-0, Owen Amato made it 3-0 with a cute lob while Nick Borg completed his hat-trick with a calm finish which made the score 4-0.

At half time, coach Mr Charles Micallef knew that Tarxien would not lay down and planned to control their efforts to get back into the game and try to hit them on the counter attack.

The second half started very well and after a few minutes had a very dangerous attack which the Tarxien rearguard managed to keep out with difficulty. From the ensuing corner kick, Owen Amato's cross was magnificently met by Fabien Lufi whose header ended in the back of the net for a 5-0 scoreline. The Stripes took their feet off the pedal, and the Rainbows managed to create a good number of goalscoring opportunities which were magnificently thwarted by our goalkeeper Matthew Abela. Unfortunately the same Abela had to be withdrawn due to a serious injury. Gianluca Zammit, a second half substitute, managed to score as he beat the Tarxien substitute custodian by chipping the ball over him when put through, thus putting further gloss on top of the scoreline. The final whistle declared Birkirkara worthy 6-0 winners over Tarxien Rainbows.

Coach Micallef was upbeat with what he had just witnessed on the pitch. “Well done to all the boys. This was a perfect performance and all players showed collective team work. Ending the first round in second place was not an easy task taking in consideration that for a number of games were not in full team. Although this shouldn't be an excuse from my end, we all knew our corrections and worked together for better results. Both Coach John Vella (Assistant) and myself think that today's performance was the best one throughout the first round and sure will be the pattern of our following games. We wish to thank everyone involved behind these games especially those players who regularly attend for training and our Head Coach Marco Glumac.”

The Under 15's will be back in action next month as they will meet Attard FC on February the 10th at the Santa Lucia Ground, kick off at 12.45am
