Stripes to face Paolites in match of the season

by Ayrton Galea - 14th April 2013

Birkirkara and Hibernians, the main two title contenders will be crossing swords in what should be a decisive encounter in this season's title race when they will battle it out this afternoon at the National Stadium.

Having peaked in the best phase of the season, Birkirkara can make a giant step forward towards winning the championship if they overcome the second-placed Paolites, while victory for the latter would put them in pole position with only three games left.

Either way you look at it, the stakes are really high for both teams who seem to have struck top form at the right time as faltering champions Valletta, now four points off the top having played a match more, have discovered to their disappointment in recent weeks.

Birkirkara had a doze of luck when they took the precious three points from the delicate encounter against Sliema with an unfortunate own goal which enabled the Stripes to regain sole leadership after Hibernians had temporarily moved on top of the table after beating Tarxien Rainbows. For the Stripes, this was their fifth consecutive victory, and the third one without conceding a goal.

On the other hand, Hibernians are also in top form as they are coming from three consecutive results thanks to firing performance. After they were defeated by Sliema Wanderers, the Paolites defeated Mosta, Valletta and Tarxien with a 3-0 score in their last outing.

An interesting fact, which however will not effect today's match is that the Paolites are still yet to beat the Stripes in this league, since Birkirkara won the first round match, the second clash ended with a draw with the Stripes notching a narrow 1-0 victory in the third round.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 17:00. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 16:00.

Come on the Stripes!
