Birkirkara and Valletta in a title show-down

by Ayrton Galea - 26th April 2013

Birkirkara and Valletta, arch rivals for the last two decades, and two of the three candidates for the BOV Premier League title, will be playing another memorable match, when they cross swords in what could be a decisive match for the winning of the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

After Birkirkara's efforts were not enough to beat Mosta and Valletta defeated Tarxien Rainbows, the latter are back in the title hunt as they are now three points under joint-leaders Birkirkara and Hibernians.

Following such an expected draw, one might have thought that Birkirkara will throw in the towel away, but this is certainly not the case. The Birkirkara clan received massive support in the past week, as their numerous supporters made a bold statement of their faith by sending hundreds of encouraging messages, which definitely shows that Club is eager for success.

Saturday's clash is expected to be a real title show-down for all the Maltese followers. Leaders of the league, Birkirkara which many consider as the most organised team with the best defence on the island will face the present Champions, Valletta who presently have the best attack on the island.

After losing their first match of the Championship Pool against Sliema Wanderers, the Stripes made a strong reaction and they are now unbeaten in their last six matches being held in two draws against Hibernians and Mosta last week.

On the other hand, after being held by Sliema Wanderers, defeated by Birkirkara and Hibernians, the Citizens returned to winning ways by defeated Mosta and Tarxien Rainbows.

Following an entertaining odds even result in the first round match, the Citizens emerged as winners in the second round with a solitary goal. However, the Stripes bounced back with a 2-0 victory over the Citizens in the third round match. A match that boosted the Birkirkara's faithful with hopes and confidence in their beloved players.

With Birkirkara three points clear on top of the table and with the third round result in their mind, the Stripes will go out for this match confident that once again they can prove their high quality found in their squad.

A win for the Stripes will put them temporarily three points clear, before Hibernians will be involved in their match against Mosta on Sunday, while it will be game over for the Citizens if they fail to beat the Stripes.

For this match, Zach Muscat is suspended for Birkirkara.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 17:00. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 15:30.

The Malta Football Association announced that the Birkirkara supporters will be staying at the West Stand (Enclosure) while the Valletta supporters will be staying at the Millennium Stand.

The Birkirkara supporters are therefore to stay in West Stand A and West Stand C and should enter Ta' Qali from Mosta and park in the West Stand parking area and roads leading to it. On the other hand, the Valletta supporters are to stay at the Millennium Stand D and F and should enter Ta' Qali from the Rabat roads and park their vehicles in that area.

We would like to urge all the supporters to come to the Stadium for this important match and support their beloved players like they did in the recent matches, and we encourage all the supporters to obey the police's instructions.

Come on the Stripes!
