Birkirkara and Mosta to fight it out for Women's title

by Ayrton Galea - 6th May 2013

Current Champions Birkirkara FC, and Mosta FC, the two most consistent teams in the Women's First Division league will be crossing swords this Tuesday, in a much awaited match. These two forces in the Women's football will face off in the last Women's league fixture which can determine this year's title winners, since they are on equal points.

For much of the last months, the two sides have been involved in a tug-of-war for the top spot but with just one fixture left, there is still nothing to separate both sides at the top of the table.

Birkirkara's utmost efforts were not enough to beat Gozo as the match ended in an odds even results, but Mosta also dropped two points as they were also held in a 1-1 draw against Hibernians. This result meant that Hibernians are now out of the title race as they lie four points under Birkirkara and Mosta with just one match to go.

However, despite failing to win last match, both sides are aware that they cannot afford a loss in order to keep their title hopes real while with a draw, the drama went to another level, as a decider will have to take place.

Last Sunday, the Stripes extended their unbeaten way to no less than seventeen matches, and having this in mind, there is no doubt that Birkirkara are filled with confidence and prepared in the best possible way for this match.

Having experienced players in their squad despite their early age, the Stripes know that they have all the guns to achieve their targets. There is certainly no room for fear for the yellow-reds, as their strong character aided with a never-give-up attitude, earned them a chance to win their second consecutive title.

On the other hand, Mosta's league campaign was also an excellent one. Having spent the first phase of the league enjoying sole leadership, the Blues know the potential found in their squad, although they have to be in their best on the day, in order to be able to defeat the organised and determined Stripes.

After suffering their first league defeat to Hibernians, the Blues shared the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw against the Stipes.

What could boost the Blues' hopes is the fact that the Stripes are still yet to beat Mosta this season. After the Blues defeated Birkirkara thanks to a penalty shout-out in the Super Cup, they defeated the Stripes in the first round of the league, before sharing the spoils in the second and third round respectively.

However, previous results for this decisive match count for nothing, as the winner will be decided by who's best on the pitch.

Birkirkara will have Stephania Farrugia, Kelly Agius Pace and Maryrose Cardona suspended for this match. However, Birkirkara FC have lodged a protest about these suspensions.

The match will be played at the Charles Abela Stadium in Mosta and is scheduled to kick off at 20:15.

We would like to urge all the Birkirkara faithful to come and support the Birkirkara Women's Team as they deserve all your backing.

Come on the Stripes!
