'I really cannot wait till Wednesday' - Isabelle Mazzitelli

by Ayrton Galea - 28th May 2013

Excitement for this Wednesday's knockout final between Birkirkara and Mosta is surely kicking in. Isabelle Mazzitelli who scored the decisive goal three weeks ago in the last match of the league, shared her thoughts before this much awaited match.

The squad went through a roller-coaster ride throughout the season, but when things began to be tough for the Stripes, Mazzitelli was part of the team who got tougher.

Mazzitelli, aged 29, kept her brilliant form and just one week later she was the Stripes' hero once again as her goal put Birkirkara in the semi-final after eliminating Pembroke with a solitary goal.

Isabelle said "This season was a bit tough. We suffered a lot of setbacks, including injuries, losing players to long term suspensions, players having to stop due to their studies, and even losing our captain for a huge part of the season.

"We had to play with a different formation every game. Coach played all of us, including those who had never played a whole game before, and many
players who did not have experience at this level. We believed, we stayed focused, and at the end we got what we worked for throughout the season.Yes, we won the league and we were crowned Champions once again."

Mazzitelli's goal was enough for the Stripes to eliminate Pembroke in the quarter-final in a match that turned to be a rather frustrating one for the Stripes, but then Birkirkara did not have to struggle much to eliminate Tarxien Rainbows in the semi-final.

"Last match was a bit of an easy one. Some players were back in our team after having served their suspension. We had a different formation yet again which included Under-16 players with the first eleven selection. We played and won again like champions."

However, Birkirkara have a totally different story tomorrow evening. Besides the rivalry between the two sides, matches between these top sides of Women's football were always balanced and only the most determined side will emerge as winner in tomorrow's clash.

The whole Birkirkara clan is excited for tomorrow's match and Isabelle is no exception.

"I really cannot wait till Wednesday. Matches like these give me more strength to play. I keep replaying all of the best moments of our season in my head, to make myself even more positive. I play these games not only with my feet, but also with my heart. This mentality keeps me going for the whole game, it keeps me going till the 93rd minute and beyond, it keeps me going till the final whistle! I believe in every player of my team as much I believe in myself. Yes, we can, all together, till the end - ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE!"

In the last match against Mosta, the Birkirkara supporters packed their side in the Charles Abela Stadium and they created a wonderful atmosphere.

"The minute we all step on the field of play, the first thing we look for is the supporters! Fortunately for us, Birkirkara has a lot of support, great loyal supporters with a great heart for the team! Supporters are part of our joy, part of our success, our twelfth player. Playing and scoring in front of our supporters, is like living a dream. It is an indescribable feeling! Here I would like to invite everyone to once again come and witness yet another victory, and celebrate our double, together!"
