Stripes seek positive ending in UWCL

by Ayrton Galea - 13th August 2013

Birkirkara FC Women's Team will be involved in the third and last match of the UEFA Women's Champions League as this afternoon, the Maltese Champions take on the Croatian side of Osijek FC.

Despite the Stripes having played their hearts out in this competition, two heavy defeats might have cancelled out the their utmost effort. There is no doubt that this afternoon the Stripes will be seeking a brighter result in order to end their Champions League's commitments on a more positive note.

The Stripes began their commitments with their first match against the Dutch side Twente FC who defeated the Maltese Champions with a 6-0 score. Last Saturday, Glasgow City outclassed the Stripes with a 9-0 score.

On the other hand, today's opponents, Osijek FC are the Croatian Champions, as they clinched the title with 54 points from 18 matches, no less than 14 points lead over second placed ZNK Rijeka.

Osijek have been taking part in this competition for the last five consecutive years and they took part for the first time in the 2008-2009 season.

Last season, they managed to write a new page in the Club's history as they made it to the round of 32 for the first time ever. However, this achievement, was not repeated in this edition, as Osijek, like Birkirkara, are already out from the challenge of advancing to the next stage of the competition.

Osijek began this year's commitments with a 7-0 defeat against Glasgow City FC, and last Saturday they were defeated with a score of 4-0 by Twente FC. Like the Stripes, they will be seeking to end their commitments on a positive note.

The match will be played at the ATC '65 Hengelo Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 17:00.

Come on the Stripes.
