Birkirkara face Hibernians in Women's Super Cup

by Ayrton Galea - 4th September 2013

With the 2013-2014 BOV Women's First Division League kicking off next week, Champions Birkirkara and Hibernians will be seeking to add a psychological boost when they face off in the Women's Super Cup this evening.

The Stripes were meant to play this finale against Mosta who earned their opportunity to compete in this match after they ended in the second position of the league standings, since Birkirkara clinched both the league and the knockout. However, Mosta pulled out of competitive football this week, and third-placed Hibernians took their place.

After a balanced league campaign last season, with Birkirkara and Hibernians being two out of the three contenders for the title, the arch-rivals will lock horns for the first time this season. It will be a contest that gives each contender the opportunity to claim the first honour of the season, while shedding more light on the potential of the teams, ahead of the start of the BOV Women's First Division League.

The Stripes are coming from a busy pre-season highlighted with the participation in the UEFA Women's Champions League where despite they suffered three heavy-defeats, the squad took another doze of experience which will certainly play its part in the coming season. Also, the Champions continued to strengthen their squad, despite not being very active this summer when it comes to signing. They signed Rebecca Chircop from Mosta FC and promising youngster Tara Attard on a one-year loan from Kirkop United FC.

On the other hand, Hibernians had the opportunity to plan their pre-season in a less hectic way since they were not involved in any competitions this summer. The Paolites were very active this summer as they signed several new players which puts them as solid contenders for being main challengers for all the domestic honours.

This will be the ninth edition of this competition since its inception in the 2004-2005 season, with Birkirkara winning the first edition by beating Hibernians thanks to a penalty shoot-out, after both teams failed to find the net after the extra time period. The Champions lead the way with four Super Cups while Hibernians have won this cup three times.

The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 20:00.

We would like to urge all the Birkirkara faithful to come and support the Women's Team.

Come on the Stripes!
