Women's Team to open title defence against Pembroke

by Ayrton Galea - 9th September 2013

Champions Birkirkara FC will be lifting the curtain on the BOV Women's First Division League 2013-2014 on Monday evening, when they face Pembroke Athleta FC.

Following a balanced and heart throbbing 2012-2013 league campaign, where the title was decided in the last league match, the 2013-2014 season is expected to be just as dramatic, as besides Champions Birkirkara, Hibernians and Gozo are also expected to be strong contenders for the title.

This year's league format will have slight changes due to the retirement of Mosta FC from the league. The league will have seven teams, and unlike last season, there will be no Championship and Relegation Pool. Each team will play eighteen matches, based on three rounds where all teams play against each other, and one team will be relegated at the end of the season.

Birkirkara will attempt to make a bold statement of their true quality after last Wednesday's 2-1 defeat against Hibernians in the Women's Super Cup.

Pembroke, who ended last season in the sixth place with 23 points, will once again hope to retain their top division status and they surely have all it takes .

Maryrose Cardona will be available for the Stripes, following a five match ban that she was handed last season. The return of the hard working player will surely create fresh options for Coach Mr. Scicluna.

When asked, Maryrose told us MaryroseCardona how the squad prepared for this match after last Wednesday's defeats. “There were a lot of negatives during the game last week but we have learnt from them. Our morale has been lifted after a meeting last week and training on the weekend. We are well prepared for Monday's match, with a positive attitude in bringing good results”

Like the whole squad, Mayrose is looking forward to yet another balanced league campaign. “There is no other better feeling when winning the league and the satisfaction that comes after it. We are ready to work hard for this moment. We have to be realistic, keeping our feet on the ground, but, yes, I do believe we can win the league.”

Finally, Maryrose had a message for the supporters who are increasing in their numbers in the Women's Team matches. “I would like to thank the supporters for always being there for us. Your faith in us is our motivation. The team needs your support, and I wish that the support we had last season will be seen again this year.

The match is going to be played at the Charles Abela Stadium in Mosta and is scheduled to kick-off at 20:15.

Come on the Stripes!
