Birkirkara FC are the new Champions of the APS Bank Under-15's League Section A. They showed superiority to end their league commitments in style thanks to a 2-0 victory over Hibernians FC last Wednesday.

The Stripes needed a point from the last match against Hibernians to win the league. A loss would have forced them into a league decider against second placed Mosta. Mosta, in their last outing defeated San Gwann, and put all the pressure on the Stripes, but the latter showed great character to be declared the new Champions of the Under-15's League top section by cruising past the challenge of Hibernians.

All the attention will now turn on the Knock-out competition, as the Stripes have their aims set on winning the double. The team will be involved in the quarter-final of the knockout against Mosta FC this Sunday.

The First Half

Pressure was high on the Birkirkara players, who knew that much was at stake, but they gained confidence as time went by. Zak Grech was enjoying a terrific performance while Ayrton Attard's runs on the Stripes' left channel were creating countless problems for Hibernians.

The Stripes deservingly took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Off a well taken corner kick from the left side by Michelle Vella, Nicholas Vella's accurate header broke the deadlock. They held strong for a 1-0 lead, till the half-time break.

The Second Half

The second half was dominated by the Stripes, despite Hibernians also creating a few goal scoring chances. Birkirkara were unlucky twice, when Karl Caruana and Kyle Mifsud both saw their shot beating the goalkeeper but being denied by the up-right. Ayrton Attard also went close with a close-range effort which was superbly blocked by the goalkeeper.

However, Birkirkara made sure of the three points and the title ten minutes from time when Kyle Mifsud had his shot blocked by the goalkeeper, but from the rebound, the technical player fired home from short distance to see the Birkirkara Clan erupting in joy.

After the match and the spontaneous celebrations by the Birkirkara players, team captain Ayrton Attard was presented with the league cup by Mr. Robert Attard, Vice-President of the Youth Football Association.
