Debutant Cain Attard interviewed

by Ayrton Galea - 26th August 2015

Cain Attard said that he did not have to think twice to accept Birkirkara FC's offer, and sign a five-year contract during this Summer Transfer Market. We talked with Cain following his debut with our Club, in the 4-0 victory over Naxxar Lions.

Joining a club like Birkirkara FC may seem a dream come true for a nineteen-year old defender like Cain, but it also means a grand challenge to fight for a regular place. However, Cain rose to the opportunity and he made his debut with our Club in the perfect start registered in the BOV Premier League.

Cain started this interview by explaining his decision to join our Club. “Birkirkara FC is one of the strongest teams in Maltese football and when I had the opportunity to choose between Birkirkara and any other team I didn't think twice - firstly, because of the calibre of the team, and secondly because it is a club that gives a lot of opportunities to local youngsters.”

He added, “Even though it is going to be a challenge to get in the squad every week due to the high level of competition I am sure that I will always learn due to the fact that I will be training with players of a certain level, so you always have to be at your best. I would also like to thank my former team Pieta Hotspurs for letting me move on and take this big step.”

Cain joined our Club in the first week of August but the defender feels settled with our team as he told us, “Yes, all the players made me feel welcome and the atmosphere in the dressing room is good, so I would like to thank them all for that. There is a professional setup here at Birkirkara, the coaching staff is of top quality and experience. All the players are determined to reach the teams' goals.”

His debut could hardly be better as the Stripes registered a comfortable victory while keeping a clean-sheet. “It was a good team performance where we dominated the game, and personally I think it was a positive start for me as a Birkirkara player. However, there is always room for improvement both as a team and on a personal level. The most important thing was bringing the 3 points home.”

The defender, who patrolled the side back, enjoyed a clean-sheet in his first match. “Yes, I was quite happy with my debut performance. I was enjoying myself on the pitch and being a defender it's a good feeling not conceding a goal and keeping a clean sheet.”

We talked with Cain about the Club's targets and also his personal targets for this season. He said “Birkirkara is a big team and obviously the main target is to win the league and any other possible honours. On the other hand, personally I will be doing my best to get to the team week in, week out, because there is a squad filled with quality players and there is a lot of healthy competition.”

Finally, Cain concluded the interview with a message for the supporters. “I would like to thank them for welcoming me to this big club and I appreciate all the messages received when arriving and also after my debut. Hopefully we will be celebrating together at the end of the season.”
