Stripes take on Sliema Wanderers

by Ayrton Galea - 23rd January 2016

Birkirkara FC, still fresh from last Wednesday's win over Valletta in the FA Trophy, will be back in action in the BOV Premier League this afternoon. They will be seeking to extend their positive run when they face Sliema Wanderers FC, which might be a tough nut to crack.

Still in a buoyant mood after the booking their place in the Quarter-Final of the FA Trophy at the expense of Valletta for the second year running, the Stripes will be turning their attention back to the BOV Premier League with the aim of keeping the heat on the league leaders.

Six points under leaders Valleta, but with a game in hand, which is scheduled for next Wednesday against St. Andrew's, the Stripes will be hoping to continue building on last Wednesday's satisfactory performance and on the three wins in a row in the Premier League.

In their last three outings in the league, the Stripes had three consecutive wins. Identical 3-0 victories against Pembroke Athleta and Mosta respectively, were followed with a 1-0 win against Qormi, where despite dominating for long stretches it was an own goal that settled the issue.

On the other hand, Sliema Wanderers will be hoping to get back on track, when in their last match, which was marred with a number of controversial decisions, they saw their unbeaten four-match run coming to an end with a 2-1 defeat against Floriana.

The Wanderers are occupying the eighth place with twenty-four points, just one point under Mosta and three points over Pembroke Athleta. Before the defeat against Floriana, they were coming from three victories, scoring twelve goals in two matches with a 6-3 win over Qormi, and a 6-1 victory over St. Andrew's, and a 1-1 draw against Mosta.

Birkirkara's defender Joseph Zerafa, who has received a three-match ban is available for today's match, as he will be carrying out the suspension in the FA Trophy. On the other hand, goalkeeper Timothy Aquilina is suspended for the Wanderers.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it will kick off at 14:00.

Come on the Stripes!
