Stephania Farrugia named the BOV Best Player of January and February

Birkirkara FC Women's Team rock solid defender Stephania Farrugia, who had enjoyed outstanding five-star defensive displays throughout the first two months of the year, has been named the BOV Player of the Month for January and February 2016.

The 24 year old defender is a fixed asset in Birkirkara's defence as she is highly considered the best defender on the island. Her solid-rock defensive skills along-side her versatility and the improved tactical positioning established her as the top player for the first two months of the year.

Her skills weren't only clear to show in defence as in Birkirkara's match against Raiders FC, Stephania kept her cool under the pressure of the more organised opponents, picking up a short clearance and driving a low shot past goalkeeper Jodie Attard for the 1-0 victory to keep the pressure on leaders Hibernians.

Stephania also found the net with a powerful header in Birkirkara's 6-1 routing of Pembroke Athleta and hit home a penalty against Hibernians in their 3-2 defeat to the league leaders. She has been playing for this Club for no less than thirteen years.

We spoke to Stephania after winning this award, which was her first one in her career, and she told us, “This award means a lot me and it gives me the courage to continue working hard. It is all owed to my team-mates who are one of my biggest greatest supports. They help me and encourage me a lot and they are very supportive in difficult moments. I would like to thank them all.”

This is the fifth month, out of a possible six months, where a Birkirkara FC player has been named the BOV Player of the Month. Gabriella Zahra won the award for the opening three months of the season in September, October and November. Rebecca D'Agostino of Mgarr won the award in December while it was now Stephania Farrugia who won the award for the following two months.

Bernard Azzopardi, Manager of Bank of Valletta's Birkirkara Branch presented the BOV Female Player of the Month trophies for January and February to Farrugia.
