Birkirkara FC holds a very special place in my heart - Gareth Sciberras

by Ayrton Galea - 6th June 2016

Gareth Sciberras says that Birkirkara FC holds a special place in his heart and that he is honoured to be the team captain of one of the biggest clubs in Malta. He said all this when he shared his views with this website following signing a one-year contract extension.

Last season was a very positive one for Gareth, that saw the tireless midfielder regaining a regular place with the Stripes and the National Team. We spoke with Gareth about his decision of renewing the contract, what the future holds in store for him and how is he looking at the upcoming season.

Gareth said, “Birkirkara FC holds a very special place in my heart, and it was a very straight forward discussion before signing the extension for another year. Above all I am honoured to be the captain of one of the biggest clubs in Malta. The respect and faith shown in me by the whole club and ultimately the president and coach contributed heavily to make the decision easy.”

It is a fact that few players remain in their best shape in their 30's, but Gareth shows that he still has a lot to offer to both Birkirkara and National team. We asked Gareth about his plans for the future and he told us, “Last season was a very positive season for me personally, and this has given me the courage to continue my career at the highest level locally. I am taking things day by day, and making the most of the games that I'm involved in, and don't wish to make any plans for the future as yet, as I prefer to look at the present.”

Gareth concluded this interview by sharing his thoughts about the upcoming season. “Next season will again be a very contested season with several clubs enhancing their squads. I believe that a club like Birkirkara FC must always challenge for honours, and next season won't be any different. On a person level I honestly wish to remain healthy and available for the coach, but also to be a genuine leader for the squad and especially for the younger players in our team.”
