Interview with Herman Bugeja

by Ayrton Galea - 11th September 2018

Birkirkara FC Under-19's Team will start their Youths League Section A commitments this evening, when they will take on Balzan FC in the first match. Few hours before this match, Coach Herman Bugeja has shared his views on the upcoming season with this website.

What are your comments on this year's pre-season? What did it involve?

This year's pre-season was good and working with this group of players is a great experience because they are a motivated bunch. Preseason involves a lot of hard work and some sacrifices from all involved within the team. It included important physical sessions mostly done with the ball together with a good number of friendly games that help the team actuate what is done in training.

What are your comments on the number of changes in the squad? How much are you happy with the new signings?

As a rule we tend to do minimal changes in a development squad such as the U19 but obviously players leave because they are not eligible to play in the U19s anymore and new players join from the U17 squad. I am very happy with the new players, who even though know that it's not easy to break through in the U19s are giving it their all. Moreover, we managed to add another 2 players to our squad (Gianluca Bugeja & Jacques Vella Critien) who will surely strengthen our team for such a long season.

What are your comments on the first match of the season?

In our first match of the season we are meeting neighbours Balzan. It will be a very tricky match as all first games, especially in what seems to be a very balanced league this season. We will be doing our best to start on a positive note and trying to win this game.

What are the team's objectives for this year?

Our objectives will stay the same as in previous years, where our main aim is producing better players for the Birkirkara FC Senior Squad and hopefully getting more players to play in top level football. Trying to play positive football and possibly getting some silverware to the club comes with all this. This is the club's and my own philosophy that developing and preparing the player to play in the highest level he possibly can is of utmost importance.

What is your final message?

The current U19 squad contains a good number of players that can possibly be in the future Birkirkara FC Senior Team Squad - So first, let us try to give them the best so that they can play with the best when time comes. One last word is to thank those who support us day in day out, my back-room staff, the senior-team technical staff, the nursery and senior committees, and to our loyal supporters.
