End of an era - Melania Bajada steps down as Women's Team Coach

by Ayrton Galea - 29th May 2022

Melania Bajada has stepped down from her role as the Women's Team Coach due to personal reasons to mark an end of an era of five successful seasons with the Club. During her time at the helm of the team, the Stripes won four league titles, three times the Knock-Out Competition, and two Super Cups.

Melania, a former player of the club between 2014 and 2016, was appointed the Women's Team Coach in June 2017. During her first season with our club, Melania registered a domestic treble by winning the Women's League, the Women's Knock-Out, and the Super Cup.

With Bajada at the helm of the team, the club also registered its first point in the UEFA Women's Champions League, when in August 2018, the Stripes held Cardiff Met FC of Wales in a 2-2 draw to become just the second Maltese team to register a point in this competition.

The club registered a domestic double by winning the Women's League and BOV Women's Knock-Out in season 2018-2019, which has also marked the first unbeaten league campaign for Bajada at the helm of the team.

The Stripes clinched again the Women Super Cup, after missing it in the previous season and won the Women's League in season 2019-2020, which was stopped earlier than expected following the outbreak of the COVID-19. Season 2020-2021 was declared null and void despite all clubs, except Birkirkara, having played 75% of their matches with the Stripes having a five-point advantage after matchday 14.

This season, Melania continued to write history with the club as the team won the BOV Women's League to clinch the 10th title and eventually won the much-awaited star to become just the second women's team that can make use of the star.

During the last league match, the Stripes matched the all-time record for unbeaten matches in the BOV Women's League as the Stripes registered sixty-nine matches unbeaten, all under the helm of Melania Bajada – the first coach to register this number of unbeaten matches.

Her historic spell with the club came to an end last Friday with the cherry on the cake as the team defeated Swieqi United FC with a 3-0 score to register another domestic double and the sixteenth Knock-Out competition in the history of the club.

The club would like to thank Melania for her sterling service to the club while wishing her all the best of luck in her future.
