In 2001, he joined the Serbian side FK Voždovac where he spent two seasons there before in the 2003-2004 season he moved to FK Pobeda in the Republic of Macedonia.

On International level, Canovic was part of the Serbian and Montenegrin 2004 Olympic football team, who exited in the first round, finishing fourth in Group C behind gold-medal winners Argentina, Australia and Tunisia.

Alexander decided to go for another different adventure and in fact he left FK Pobeda where he returned to Serbia and joined FK Vojvodina where he managed to make 9 appearances.

In the 2005-2006 season he joined another Serbian side FK BASK where once again he managed to make nine appearances.

In probably the best season for Canovic, the 2006-2007 he moved back to FK Voždovac where he was the number one choice between the posts and made no less than 23 appearances.

Canovic arrived Malta on the 21 October and he managed to impress the Technical Staff and the Committee which then agreed all terms and joined our club as an amateur player.
