Andrei Agius joins Birkirkara FC

by Ivan Mizzi - 20th January 2011

Birkirkara today registered their second new player for this transfer market as they managed to secure the services of the 23 year old international player, Andrei Agius.

After having attended his first training session with our team last evening, moments ago Andrei put pen to paper, and sealed the much anticipated move. He is on loan from the Italian side of A.S. Melfi till the end of the season.

Andrei needs no introduction to the Maltese football, as he is a regular player with the Maltese National Squad. He made his debut in the Maltese Premier League with the senior team of Sliema Wanderers on the 19 December 2003, in a match against Floriana.

Andrei always showed his aim to play abroad, and when he was just sixteen years he joined the Serbian first-division club FC Zemun. Andrei was given a six-month contract to play for Zemun's youth team, scoring two goals during this spell. In this period he became friends with his team mate Nikola Vukanac, and now they are re-united at Birkirkara FC.

In that Summer, he was on the move again, and this time he travelled to Sicily where he signed for Sporting Mascalucia. During his experience with this team he managed to score three goals, and was named as the most promising midfielder in the regional league.

After another positive campaign with FC Mascalucia, in the summer of 2005, Agius signed a contract with the Italian Serie A club Messina where he became a member of their youth squad. In his first year with Messina, Agius was given the role of a defender.

In February 2006, Agius took part in the 58th Torneo Mondiale di Calcio Coppa Carnevale and scored two goals, one against Pistoiese and the other against Torino. In May 2006, Agius was among the Messina substitutes for the Serie A match against Empoli. After his initial one-year spell with Messina, Agius was loaned to Serie C1 side FC Martina Franca on the last day of the 2006 August transfer window.

During season 2006-07, Agius faced competition for a first-team place from experienced and seasoned players but still managed five appearances for FC Martina Franca in the Coppa Italia. In the 2007-08 season, Agius made a return to Serie C2 where he linked up with FC Igea Virtus (Messina), regarded as the second team of Messina Calcio.

In his first season with Igea Virtus, Agius played 34 league matches and once in the Coppa Italia. In March 2008, Agius signed a four-year deal with Messina but in the summer of 2009, financial difficulties forced the Serie B club to file for bankruptcy. Agius was freed from his contractual obligations with the club. He rejoined Igea Virtus where he was an automatic choice in their first team.

Later in the 09/10 season, Agius joined Serie C2 team SS Cassino. On January 2010 Agius was loaned to A.S. Melfi. In August 2010 Agius signed a two year contract with A.S. Melfi.

Like Rodolfo, Andrei is expected to make his debut for Birkirkara on Saturday against Hamrun Spartans.

We wish the best of luck to Andrei with our Club.
