'The Stripes' to take on 'The Wanderers' in Quarter Final

by Ayrton Galea - 18th March 2011

On Saturday Birkirkara will be involved in the second major competition of the Maltese football as 'The Stripes' will face Sliema Wanderers in the quarter final of the U*BET FA Trophy.

Birkirkara are coming from a very satisfactory result as they managed to beat Marsaxlokk with a score of 4-1. Thanks to this win they climbed again to the second place of the standings.

Our opponents Sliema are coming from a win as well, as they managed to come from behind and beat Vittoriosa with a score of 2-1 despite playing for more then fifty minute with a player less. This win for Sliema was enough to secure them Premier League status for next season.

This season, these two sides met twice in the Premier League. The first time 'The Stripes' managed to trash Sliema Wanderers with a score of 4-1. In the second match they shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Over these last ten years Birkirkara and Sliema met in several occasions in this cup. In fact from season 2000-2001 they met six times with four of them being won by Birkirkara. Below are the FA Trophy results between these two teams from season 2000-2001.

10th May 2001 - Semi Final - Birkirkara 2-1 Sliema Wanderers. Scorers: Michael Galea and Lino Galea.

23rd May 2002 - Final - Birkirkara 1-0 Sliema Wanderers. Scorer: Matthew Calascione.

22nd May 2003 - Final - Birkirkara 1-0 Sliema Wanderers. Scorer: Michael Galea.

13th May 2004 - Semi Final - Birkirkara 1-2 Sliema Wanderers. Scorer: Lucian Dronca.

13th May 2005 - Semi Final - Birkirkara 0-0 (5-4 pens) Sliema Wanderers.

07th April 2007 - Quarter Final - Birkirkara 1-2 Sliema Wanderers. Scorer: Etienne Barbara.

From these matches, ignoring the penalty shoot outs, Birkirkara scored six goals and conceded five.

For this match, Mr. Paul Zammit will have Rowen Muscat and Shaun Bajada available for selection after they were ruled out last week. Joseph Zerafa also recovered in time from an injury suffered earlier this week. Michael Fraser is still ruled out injured, and is expected to be operated in the coming days.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it is scheduled to start at 14:00. Transport from Valley Road, Birkirkara will leave at 13:00.

Come on the Stripes!
