Birkirkara to face Hamrun on Sunday

by Ayrton Galea - 16th April 2011

Tomorrow afternoon, Birkirkara will be hoping for another three precious points when they face Hamrun Spartans.

Although the win of 3-0 in the last match against Tarxien Rainbows indicates that it was a one-sided affair, the performance of 'The Stripes' was still not up to par. However, one should mention the improvement made after the humiliation against Floriana when the latter beat 'The Stripes' with a score of 5-1.

On the other hand, tomorrow's opponents, Hamrun Spartans have failed to notch a win in this Championship Pool phase. So far they have only managed to register two draws, in the first two matches of this phase. The first one was against Valletta and the other one against Birkirkara with the identical score of 1-1. Hamrun are coming from four consecutive defeats against Tarxien, Floriana, Marsaxlokk and Valletta respectively.

Over the past ten seasons, statistics show that Birkirkara always dominated Hamrun Spartans. In fact it was in season 2001-2002 that Hamrun beat Birkirkara for the last time. In total these two teams met 25 times and Birkirkara managed to pick up a win no less than 20 times. Four times the match ended in a draw with the other match being won by Hamrun with a score of 1-0. The best win that Birkirkara registered in these ten seasons was a score of 6-0 which was registered twice, once in the 2003-2004 season and the other one was registered in the 2005-06 season In total Birkirkara scored 66 goals and conceded 16 which results in fifty goals in favour of Birkirkara

This season these two teams met three times. Birkirkara beat Hamrun once, in the second round. In the first and third round they were held in a 1-1 draw.

The long streak of injuries continues to haunt Birkirkara. Mr. Paul Zammit will yet again not have the full selection available, as Michael Fraser is still recovering from his operation, and Patrick Borg and Shaun Bajada are ruled out injured. On a more positive note, Andrei Agius will be back after serving a one match suspension

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it will kick off at 15:00. Transport from Valley Road is available and it will leave at 14:00

Come on the Stripes!
