Birkirkara face Rabat in AME Cup

by Ayrton Galea - 29th July 2012

Birkirkara need only a draw to be declared the winners of Group A when this evening they will face Rabat Ajax in their third match of the AME Cup. However they are certain of a spot in the semi-finals, as two teams from each group will go through, and Birkirkara can only finish in the first two sports.

So far Birkirkara are the only team in Group A that has managed to win both matches. In the first match against Sliema, Birkirkara were two goals down after just sixteen minutes but thanks to a great comeback they managed to turn the match around and win with a 4-2 score. In the second match, played last Thursday, Birkirkara came back twice from behind to beat Qormi with a 3-2 score, with Birkirkara's hero being Joselito Dos Reis who scored two beautiful goals.

On the other hand, today's opponents Rabat Ajax are also in the chance to be declared the winners of the group. However, to do so, they must beat Birkirkara to have level points, but thanks to the direct encounter rule, they would be declared as winners of the group. After opening their commitments well with a fine 2-0 win over Qormi, they were trounced with a 4-0 defeat against Sliema Wanderers last Sunday.

Having already experimented with the squad in the last two matches, it is not a secret that Mr. Zammit will continue giving the opportunity to the younger players in the squad, while also continuing the preparation for the upcoming Premier League.

Birkirkara's opponent in the semi-finals is still uncertain as all the four teams in Group B, that is Balzan Youths, Mosta, Tarxien Rainbows and Hamrun Spartans are all in the chance to advance.

The match will be played at the Luxol Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 18:30.
