'It was a moment of magic' - Edward Herrera

by Ayrton Galea - 24th December 2013

'I couldn't have hit it better and I was amazed to see it end up on target, at the back of the net. I immediately knew I had scored a gem and I was ecstatic. It was a moment of magic.' - Edward Herrera told us following his goal of the career scored in the victory over Hibernians last Sunday.

Herrera's stunning volley on Sunday's afternoon in the BOV Premier League match against Hibernians paved the way for an emphatic 2-1 victory and the twenty-seven year old shared his views following his brilliant goal and the team's satisfactory ending to 2013.

The match of the week was being a balanced encounter but Herrera came out with a gem of goal five minutes in the second half to spark the match into life, and he swung the match in his team's favour.

We opened this short interview with the speedy wing-back by asking him to describe in his words the action that led to this stunning. ‘I was having a very quiet game by my standards, until I saw Rowen's perfect long-field ball coming towards the box. I realised that I was going to reach it before it bounced and I just decided to smash it, probably partly out of frustration at my uneventful match till then! I couldn't have hit it better and I was amazed to see it end up on target, at the back of the net. I immediately knew I had scored a gem and I was ecstatic. It was a moment of magic.'

Herrera believes that the tactical organization has been the key factor in this game when he spoke of last Sunday's game. ‘I think it was a very tactical match and both teams cancelled out each other for long periods. However it was a match that could have gone either way had Hibernians taken their chances prior to my goal and Jhonnattann's. I think the result was harsh on them but our tactical discipline and shots on target eventually paved the way for the three points.'

Nine wins in a row in the BOV Premier League is certainly not an easy task to achieve and we asked the speedy wing-back what is the secret that is currently leading to this success. ‘The secret is that we're approaching each game with the right attitude by respecting our opponents and preparing well for every game. As a result, we're being more aggressive in attack and solid in defence.'

The Stripes are currently four points clear at the top of the table and the victory over Hibernians certainly continued to increase the optimism in the Birkirkara supporters but Herrera has words of caution. ‘It's very important not to get carried away. The points still have to be halved at the end of this round and there are still a lot of points to be won. We mustn't forget that only a couple of months ago, Hibernians were 7 points ahead of us yet now they lie 6 points behind us. If we think that we have already achieved something, it will be the biggest mistake we can make as we will end up in a similar situation.'

'Our main target is to remain united as a squad and retain our title of Champions. We are also aiming for the double which would be the first in the club's history and I believe that we have all the credentials to reach our goals.'

Finally, Edward concluded by saying, “I wish to dedicate this special goal that I scored to the supporters as a Christmas present. I hope that the Club can get more members to support it and hopefully if everyone works together, we will be celebrating once again in May.”
