Stripes, City in top of table clash

by Ayrton Galea - 1st February 2014

Expectations are high for tomorrow's top of the table clash when Birkirkara and Valletta cross swords. Tomorrow's game is not a make-or-break affair, especially for the table-leaders, Birkirkara. However a victory tomorrow could be crucial in the challenge for the BOV Premier League title between these two local heavyweights.

Coming from an impressive thirteenth straight wins, the Stripes will be aiming not only to consolidate their position at the top of the BOV Premier League, but they will be seeking to set a new record of most consecutive victories in the Premier League.

Last Monday, the Maltese Champions gave another dazzling performance as without much effort, they proved to be too strong for Tarxien Rainbows and defeated them with a 3-1 score.

On the other hand, Valletta are aware that they are only side that can realistically halt the Maltese Champions from claiming their fifth Premier League title, and they will do their utmost to make up for last season's disappointment.

Following a goal-less draw, the Citizens had two victories as they beat Vittoriosa 4-0 and then Rabat Ajax 6-1.

Both Clubs were active in the last week of the January's Transfer Market as they sought to strengthen their squad. While Birkirkara just swapped one player, the Citizens made a total re-shuffle in their setup. Birkirkara acquired the services of Ronaille Calheira Seara after agreeing terms with Tarxien Rainbows to swap him with Demba Toure. On the other hand, Valletta secured the services of goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili, midfielders Irakli Maisuradze and Vladimir Rassulov and strikers Alan da Silva Souza and Abayomi Owonikoko Seun.

The Stripes will be without the services of Joseph Zerafa who is suspended. On the other hand, Valletta has Denni Dos Santos and Elford Alliyu injured.

In the first round match, an own goal handed Birkirkara a precious 1-0 victory over Valletta.

The Police Commissioner advised that Birkirkara supporters should enter Ta' Qali from Pitkali Road, Attard, in the direction of the Model Aircraft airfield and park along the road leading to the stadium and the parking area close to the ASM Club House and MFA Training Grounds. West Stand A and Millennium Stand F will be reserved for Naxxar and Birkirkara supporters.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 16:00. Transport for this match will leave from the Infetti Training Centre, at 14:00.

Come on the Stripes!
