Women's Team to take on Kirkop United

by Ayrton Galea - 5th January 2015

Birkirkara FC Women's Team have been unstoppable in the first eight matches in the BOV Women's League, and they are on maximum points, but they will be seeking to extend this streak when they take on Kirkop United FC in a tricky match this evening.

In their remarkable campaign so far, the Stripes claimed three victories in direct clashes against Hibernians, Mgarr United and Raiders. In their last match against Raiders, which Birkirkara won with a 2-1 score, the match seemed to be heading to a 1-1 draw, but fifteen minutes from time, Martina Cilia struck a thunderous shot to hand them the three points.

Sitting on a three-point cushion, before the direct clash between second-placed Hibernians and Raiders, who are just two points under Hibernians, the Stripes will be seeking to extend their winning streak. They are so far enjoying the best attack by scoring no less than sixty goals and conceding just two.

Yet, the Stripes' task of marching on is not as easy as it looks, as Kirkop have established themselves as one of main forces in Women's football. With Kirkop laying in the sixth place of the Women's League, one might get the impression that the Stripes will be involved in a routine task of taking the three points, but Kirkop have had some excellent matches this season.

Kirkop have won five matches this season thanks to beating Hamrun Spartans, Lija-Iklin, Tarxien Rainbows, Sliema Wanderers and Swieqi United FC, while they have suffered three defeats at the hands of Mgarr United, Raiders and Pembroke Athleta.

Birkirkara's Coach, Mr. Johann Scicluna, has no selection problems for this match. Rebecca Chricop has recovered in time following a long-term injury which has kept her out of play for the last four months. Kelly Agius Pace, who suffered an ankle injury in the match against Lija-Iklin, has also successfully completed her recovery in time, and she is available for selection.

The match will be played at the Mgarr Grounds and is scheduled to kick off at 20:15.

We would like to encourage all the supporters to come and support the Women's Team.

Come on the Stripes!
