'We won't surrender' - Nikola Vukanac

by Ayrton Galea - 9th January 2015

Nikola Vukanac refuses to surrender the fight for the league title and he believes that the team is going to fight till the end in an interview just a few hours Birkirkara take on Tarxien Rainbows FC.

Birkirkara last Sunday registered the biggest win of the season when they defeated Mosta FC with a 5-1 score. Nikola told us, “We have worked hard during the holidays, actually we had only three days off from our last game in the league. We used this time very well to prepare for the coming matches and the match against Mosta was the first out of the five matches that we have to play in January.”

He added, “I think it was important that we started 2015 with the three points and a positive performance. We are happy that we have scored five goals, and we could have scored more. On the other hand, we're not happy that we conceded one goal. I'm sure we can improve in every department.”

In a struggling Premier League campaign, there were few players that managed to keep their consistency but Vukanac was one of them. Vukanac said, “I'm happy that I played all of the games till now and that I didn't have big problems with injuries. I'm working hard to improve my game, in areas where I think I can be much better and I'm sure that hard work will pay off. Undoubtedly, my performances will be better. I don't think that I reached my top level and there is a lot of space for improvement.

As the Stripes will take on Tarxien Rainbows in a few hours, we asked Vukanac about this match and he said, “The game against Tarxien is another important game for us and we will give everything to win it. Every point is important and we can't afford to drop any points. In the first-round match, we lost 3-1, and now we have another chance against them and our concentration and motivation must be at maximum. The atmosphere is very good and we are looking forward for this match. We have worked hard during the week and we know how we should approach this match.”

When asked about Birkirkara's league title chances, Nikola said “We had our ups and downs but for us the league is not over yet! At the moment, fifteen points is a big gap but there are still a lot of games to be played. I believe that this squad has a lot of potential and that we are capable to win against any team on the island. Consistency has been our problem until now but I think that now we know much more each other and that means we should have better results. Definitely that we won't surrender and will keep fighting till the end.”

About his targets for this season, Nikola said, “My targets are to win more silverware. Is it possible? I believe it is and I will fight for it until the very last minute. Hopefully it will be enough and we will celebrate together."

Nikola concluded this interview with a message for the supporters, by saying “I have a lot of respect for those supporters that are with us in good and bad times, that's priceless. Thank you!”
