Stripes aware of Rainbows challenge

by Ayrton Galea - 3rd April 2015

The BOV Premier League will resume this weekend, following a week break, and Birkirkara FC will be all-out to extend their positive run, when they face Tarxien Rainbows FC.

The Stripes heaved a sigh of relief when Naxxar held Hibernians in a draw, and gifted the Stripes the opportunity to get back in the title race, after their spirits were dampened the week before when they were held in a goal-less draw against Floriana. Yet, Birkirkara's task remains an up-hill struggle, as the Paolites still have an eight points lead with only six matches to go. However, Hibernians' have to be in their top-form, as they will now face the first-six teams in the league standings.

The Stripes are enjoying a fifteen-match unbeaten run, as their last defeat goes back to the first match of the second round when they were surprisingly defeated with a 4-3 score against Pieta Hotspurs. Birkirkara had to survive another late scare by the Hotspurs in their last league match, but Mauricio Mazzetti's first-goal with our Club two minutes from time, gave the Stripes a 2-1 win, after Pieta had equalized three minutes later.

Tarxien Rainbows have no other option but to go for a win, in order to get out of the red zone. They are anchored in the last place of the standings, with eleven points, one under Zebbug Rangers. The Rainbows are coming from six consecutive defeats and in their last match, they conceded the lead, as Balzan came from behind with two late strikes to win the match 3-2.

Following a 3-2 disappointing defeat in the first round at the hands of Tarxien, the Stripes pulled one back by winning the second round match with a 2-1 score.

The Stripes have no less than four players' availability doubtful, as Gareth Sciberras, Joseph Zerafa, Rafael Ledesma and Shola Shodiya have all missed last Saturday's friendly-match against Malta Under-21's National Team. Ellinton Morais is in the final stages of his recovery, but he's ruled-out for tomorrow's match.

The match will be played at the Hibernians Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 16:00.

Come on the Stripes!
