Stripes take on leaders Balzan

by Ayrton Galea - 15th January 2017

Birkirkara FC will be seeking to continue building on their positive start of the New Year and aim for the third consecutive victory in the BOV Premier League, when this afternoon they take on leaders Balzan FC.

This year's challenge for the first four spots is turning to be one of the most balanced in the last years with only seven points separating leaders Balzan and fifth-placed Birkirkara, who will be all out not only to consolidate their place but also to strengthen their position in the title run.

Following a poor ending in the last year, Birkirkara registered back to back victory last week against Mosta and Pembroke Athleta with an identical 2-0 score to boost their morale and lift them to seven points under leaders Balzan.

On the other hand, Balzan consolidated their lead on top in the last match with a narrow 2-1 victory over Gzira United. The Reds were coming from a 2-1 victory against Hibernians in the last fixture of December to see them taking a sole leadership.

Coach Nikola Jaros will be boosted by the return of Christian Bubalovic who has recovered from a knee injury, while Club's latest signing Gary Muir is also available for selection. On the other hand, Balzan Coach Oliver Spiteri can't count on the suspended Alfred Effiong but Bojan Kaljevic and Elkin Serrano returns from suspension. Their latest signing Milos Lepovic is available for selection.

In the first round match, in one of Birkirkara's best performances this season, they had defeated Balzan with a comfortable 3-0 score thanks to a brace of Vito Plut and an own goal.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it will kick off at 14:00.

Come on the Stripes!
