Stripes seek second consecutive win

by Ayrton Galea - 11th March 2017

Birkirkara FC will be seeking to register the second consecutive victory in the BOV Premier League, when they take on Hamrun Spartans on Sunday afternoon.

Last weekend's victory over Tarxien Rainbows, courtesy of a goal by Miguel Alba, lifted Birkirkara's spirits as they returned to winning ways and moved just two points behind Floriana, after the latter were held in a goal-less draw against St. Andrew's.

The Stripes will be certainly hoping to build on this victory as the league is in its decisive stage with nine remaining matches to go. However, although trimming the gap with Floriana to two points, Valletta confirmed their fine form as they consolidated their six-point lead over the Stripes.

However, Birkirkara's quest tomorrow is anything than easy. The Spartans emerged as winners with a 2-0 score in the last meeting between the two sides, which had to be the last match of Coach Drazen Besek.

The Spartans confirmed their tag of a tricky side in the Premier League when just two weeks ago, they shared the spoils with Hibernians in a 3-3 draw in an entertaining match, that saw the Spartans twice in the lead but had to make a comeback to save a point.

However, they were defeated with a 3-1 score against Gzira United in the last match as this was their fourth defeat in the last five matches. The Spartans are in the eight position with twenty-seven points, two over the same Gzira while two under Tarxien Rainbows.

Coach Nikola Jaros must do without the services of Predrag Jovic, as the towering defender is suspended. On a more positive note, Ryan Scicuna returns from a one-match suspension while Matthew Guillaumier has recovered from an injury.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and it will kick off at 16:00. Transport for the match is available and it will leave Valley Road at 15:15.

Come on the Stripes!
