Grech: We did enough to win the game

by Ayrton Galea - 16th January 2019

Birkirkara FC midfielder Jake Grech has praised the team's performance in last Sunday's goal-less draw against Balzan FC, despite admitting his disappointment to settle for a point after the team created several scoring opportunities in this direct clash.

The Stripes were forced to settle for a goal-less draw in the direct clash for the top-four challenge of the BOV Premier League, as they were unable to convert their several scoring opportunities to take one point from the opening match of the second and final round.

Grech, who produced an excellent performance, opened by saying, “I believe that it was a good performance, especially in the first half where we had several occasions to score, but in football if you don't score, you don't win. I feel disappointed because I believe that we did enough to win this game. “

The result lifted the Stripes to the fifth-place, joined with Sliema Wanderers FC just one point less Hamrun Spartans FC, and they will be seeking to return to winning ways tomorrow evening, when they take on the tricky test of Pieta Hotspurs FC.

Jake is aware of the upcoming tricky encounter as he praised the opponents. “It's going to be a difficult game against a team who tactically disciplined and leaves it hearts out for every ball, but for us, maximum points from this match is crucial to keep the pace with the front-four.”

The appointment of the Sporting Director, Mr. John Riise has dominated the headlines in the last days and the former Norweigian National Team player has led the team from the touch-line in last Sunday's match.

The twenty-one-year-old midfielder believes that his experience will be vital for the team in the near future. “It's something nice and of an honour to have a Sporting Director like Mr. John Riise where you have the opportunity to work with someone with that experience in football. I believe that his experience will help us a lot in the near future.”

The Stripes have so far been one of the most active local clubs in the summer transfer market, as they have already added five new players to their ranks. With twelve matches remaining, Grech believes that everything is up for grabs.“Our objective is to win every game and to challenge for every honour that the Maltese football offers. There twelve matches remaining and everything is up for grabs.”

Grech signed off this interview with a message to the supporters, “I ask them to stay behind us, like they have always been. I promise them that their support make a big difference for us.”
